Although I am neither an Americanist nor an American I am a comparative symbologist, interested in processual as well as structural aspects of ritual, myth, and symbol. The two essays that precede abound in general theoretical statements, and I wish to address myself briefly to the issues raised by each author that have the widest comparative implications. Each essay is rich in ideas and data, and I regret that space permits only a condensed treatment.
