The objective of this work was to determine the mechanisms of oxidative degradation of two non-oxide reinforced oxide composites. The composite systems studied were: (1) SiC whiskers in MgAl2O4 spinel and (2) SiC whiskers in 3Al2O3–2SiO2 (mullite). The components of the composites were chosen for their stability, purity, thermochemical compatibility, and oxidation resistance.
