Abstract

The reconstruction of the Si(100) surface has been studied using a potential consisting of two- and three-body interactions [1]. Minimum energy quenches of a slab of 320 Si atoms 10 layers thick with periodic boundary conditions in the xy plane found the p(2×l) reconstruction lower in energy than the c(2×2) reconstruction. The potential energy contours for the addition of an adatom to the (100) surface were determined for the unreconstructed surface and for the p(2×l) and c(2×2) reconstructions.
