A mangrove forest can harbour several macroalgal assemblages growing on pneumatophores, roots, stems and other hard substrates. These algae belong to various genera, most typically Bostrychia, and form a community called the Bostrychietum. This study describes the fauna associated with the Bostrychietum and the effect of emersion time on the community. Seasonal samples were collected from pneumatophores on an island in Araçá Bay in 2012, in two areas, one on the border of the island and one inland. Each pneumatophore was considered a sample. The border samples, with a shorter emersion time, contained a richer algal flora associated with pneumatophores, and fauna with species of varied dietary habits. The inland samples, with a longer emersion time, contained only two algal genera and fauna species comprised mostly of omnivorous amphipods and desiccation-resistant detritivorous species. Macrofauna diversity and richness varied over time and were lower in spring. Therefore, the emersion time of the Bostrychietum and the period of the year affect the community structure, for both the macroalgae and the associated fauna.

An investigation was carried out to study the growth, mortality and exploitation of bigeye scad, Selar crumenophthalmus off the Mumbai coast during September 2008 to August 2009. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was derived as Lt = 310 mm [1−exp {−1.4 year−1 × (t−(−0.059 year))}] with the growth performance index (ø’) of 3.13. The fishable lifespan of the species was 2+ years in Mumbai waters. Bigeye scad attains total length of 240 and 293 mm during its first and second year of life. The size at first capture (Lc) was estimated as 240 mm (1+ year). The recruitment was continuous and throughout the year with a single pulse during August. Nearly 50% of the recruitment took place during August and September. The total, natural and fishing mortality rates were 4.62, 2.21 and 2.41 year−1, respectively. The estimated exploitation ratio (0.52) was very close to the optimum value of 0.5. Hence, the stock can be considered as optimally over-exploited in Mumbai waters.

Sponges of the Mycale genus are an important source of several bioactive metabolites. The raw materials for studies on this genus mainly come from the wild populations. However, the scarce biomass of sponges in the wild has become an obstacle to the better investigation of the active substances. To establish aquaculture methods based on the sexual reproduction of the demosponge Mycale phyllophila and solve the sponge shortage problems, the sexual reproductive cycle of this species was studied. Our investigation is the first to report the sexual reproduction of the Mycale species in the coastal waters of China. We collected the sponge specimens from Dongshan Bay (Fujian, China) monthly from June 2012 to January 2014. Small samples of approximately 8 cm3 in volume were cut from 15 sponges (10 tagged individuals and five random individuals) with surgical scissors for histological analysis. The results indicated that M. phyllophila is a hermaphroditic and viviparous species. The primary oocytes measured 30–50 μm in diameter, while mature oocytes reached 300–400 µm by engulfing nearby nurse cells. Spermatic cysts containing asynchronous cells were found throughout the mesohyl, especially adjacent to the oscula. Macromeres in the middle and micromeres in the periphery were observed as the cleavage progressed. The reproductive activity of M. phyllophila lasted for 5–6 months and peaked when the average water temperature was above 25°C. This suggests that water temperature is an important environmental factor influencing the sexual reproduction cycle.

Humans who eat fish are exposed to mixtures of healthful nutrients and harmful contaminants that are influenced by environmental and ecological factors. Marine fisheries are composed of a multitude of species with varying life histories, and harvested in oceans, coastal waters and estuaries where environmental and ecological conditions determine fish exposure to both nutrients and contaminants. Many of these nutrients and contaminants are thought to influence similar health outcomes (i.e., neurological, cardiovascular, immunological systems). Therefore, our understanding of the risks and benefits of consuming seafood require balanced assessments of contaminants and nutrients found in fish and shellfish. In this paper, we review some of the reported benefits of fish consumption with a focus on the potential hazards of mercury exposure, and compare the environmental variability of fish oils, selenium and mercury in fish. A major scientific gap identified is that fish tissue concentrations are rarely measured for both contaminants and nutrients across a range of species and geographic regions. Interpreting the implications of seafood for human health will require a better understanding of these multiple exposures, particularly as environmental conditions in the oceans change.

Soft bottom intertidals of the Atlantic SW are dominated by the semi-terrestrial crab Neohelice granulata and the grapsid crab Cyrtograpsus angulatus. They are similar in size but C. angulatus is mainly a subtidal species, while N. granulata inhabits the intertidal zones, thus the two species overlap only during high tides in this area. Since these distribution differences between crab species across the Mar Chiquita Coastal lagoon may affect digenean infection success, the objective of this work is to describe the spatial differences in parasite infection levels and their selectivity on the host. To determine possible spatial differences in parasitism levels between sites and crab species across the lagoon, three areas dominated by N. granulata were selected and adult crabs of N. granulata and C. angulatus were collected. Both crab species harboured metacercariae of the digeneans Microphallus szidati and Maritrema bonaerensis (Microphallidae), and cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Profilicollis chasmagnathi (Profilicollidae). Digenean species showed preferences between the two crabs. Maritrema bonaerensis mean intensity was higher in N. granulata than in C. angulatus, while the opposite trend was found for M. szidati and could indicate some level of specificity. These results, nevertheless, depended on the study site. For P. chasmagnathi the highest values of mean intensity depended more on the site than on the crab species. The values found here, compared with previous works from both crab species, suggest that besides the spatial heterogeneity, interspecific competition between parasites could explain the differences observed.

The monospecific hexactinellid sponge genus Symplectella endemic to New Zealand waters was originally assigned to family Rossellidae within the order Lyssacinosida (subclass Hexasterophora), although affinities to family Euplectellidae were also noted. Seventy-eight years later, the genus was transferred to Euplectellidae (subfamily Corbitellinae) on rather subjective grounds. Here, I test these two competing taxonomic hypotheses with molecular phylogenetic methods and demonstrate that Symplectella rowi is indeed a rossellid, as was originally suggested. The genus is officially transferred back to Rossellidae (subfamily Rossellinae), which represents another small step towards a more natural classification system of glass sponges.

The ommastrephid squid, Illex coindetii, is one of the most abundant cephalopods in the Mediterranean Sea and an important predator in the ecosystem. In the present study, we examined the diet habits of I. coindetii in the north-western Mediterranean Sea by combining two complementary approaches: stomach content and stable isotopic analyses. Specifically, we examined whether the diet differed between sizes and seasons. Stomach content results indicated that the diet of I. coindetii was composed of 35 prey items including four major groups; namely the crustaceans Pasiphaea sivado, Amphipods, squid of the Order Teuthida, and pelagic and mesopelagic fish. Differences were found among different ontogenetic sizes: juvenile individuals fed mainly on crustaceans (%IRI = 77.59), whereas adult individuals fed on a wider range of prey items, including the shrimp P. sivado (%IRI = 33.21), the amphipod Anchylomera blossevillei (%IRI = 0.91), the decapod Plesionika sp. (%IRI = 0.19), the carangid Trachurus trachurus (%IRI = 0.34) and some Myctophids species (%IRI = 0.21). Differences were also found between seasons in the year. In winter, crustaceans were the main prey items, whereas in summer the diversity of prey was higher, including fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Similar to the stomach contents, stable isotopic results indicated differences among sizes. δ15N values were higher in adult squids than in juveniles because they fed on prey at higher trophic levels. In conclusion, this study indicates that feeding habits of I. coindetii vary seasonally and ontogenetically. These feeding variations may be associated with trophic competence scenarios based on size, and also with the availability and abundance of prey throughout the year.

The present study is the first record of twinning in Lagenorhynchus acutus and indeed any Lagenorhynchus sp. Both foetuses were male and located in the left uterine horn, had distinct grossly normal placentas and amniotic sacs, and were therefore likely dizygotic twins. The twins were an incidental finding in an animal that died of a systemic Brucella ceti infection.

In this research, the feeding guild composition of the polychaete community was described and analysed in the northern Yellow Sea, China. The polychaete feeding guilds also showed a distinct seasonal abundance fluctuation that was similar to that observed for macrofauna. Burrowers were the most predominant feeding guild, whereas filter feeders and herbivores only constituted a negligible proportion of the total abundance. A Spearman rank correlation was performed to analyse the relationships between the feeding guilds and the environmental parameters. Surface deposit feeders and carnivores appeared to be vulnerable to variations of environmental conditions. However, burrowers and filter feeders were not susceptible to the natural or anthropogenic disturbances, with grain size determined to be the only conclusive factor. These results revealed that the feeding guild of polychaetes showed significant spatial and temporal changes, and spatial heterogeneity was a stronger predictor than temporal variation. The feeding guilds of polychaetes can be applied alone to discern the environmental change, which would be faster and more cost-effective with best equilibrium between the precision of the results and a decrease in taxonomic effort. Furthermore, bimonthly sampling was proved to be unessential and reduction of the sampling frequency was necessary to save expense and effort.

A new species of polychaete, Armandia sampadae was collected from shallow sandy sediments off Rutland Island (57 m depth) and off North Andaman (52 m depth) during a benthic survey along the continental shelf of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The major character which distinguishes this species from other members of the genus Armandia is the presence of a pair of large, flattened, rounded, stalked, pigmented, leaf-shaped ventral papillae at the ventral base of the ringed anal funnel and the occurrence of a pair of sub-triangular black pigmented spots in the basal portion of the ventral papillae.

The acoustic performance and behaviour of free-ranging cetaceans requires investigation under natural conditions to understand how wild animals use sound. This is also useful to develop quantitative evaluation techniques for passive acoustic monitoring. There have been limited studies on the acoustics of the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin; nevertheless, this species is of particular concern because of the anthropogenic activity in the coastal habitats. In the present study, we used a four-hydrophone array to estimate the apparent source levels (ASLs) of biosonar sequences (click trains), of this species in San-Niang Bay, China. As the dolphins approached the array, 173 click trains were found to meet the criteria of on-axis sounds produced within 60 m of the equipment. In total, 121 unclipped click trains were used for the ASL estimation. The qualified click trains contained 36.3 ± 32.5 clicks, lasting for 1.5 ± 1.5 s, with average inter-click intervals (ICIs) of 51.2 ± 38.3 ms. Average ICIs showed a bimodal distribution, with a cut-off at 20 ms. Short-range click trains, with short ICIs of <20 ms on average, were characterized by smaller ASLs, relatively stable ICIs and a shorter click train duration. The mean back-calculated ASL for humpback dolphins with an approximately maximum body size of 2.5 m was 181.7 ± 7.0 dB re 1 μPa at a distance of 1.6–57.2 m. This value was comparable to that recorded for other dolphins of similar body size, although the ASL estimates obtained in this study might be conservative.

Microalgal blooms are a natural part of the seasonal cycle of photosynthetic organisms in marine ecosystems. They are key components of the structure and dynamics of the oceans and thus sustain the benefits that humans obtain from these aquatic environments. However, some microalgal blooms can cause harm to humans and other organisms. These harmful algal blooms (HABs) have direct impacts on human health and negative influences on human wellbeing, mainly through their consequences to coastal ecosystem services (fisheries, tourism and recreation) and other marine organisms and environments. HABs are natural phenomena, but these events can be favoured by anthropogenic pressures in coastal areas. Global warming and associated changes in the oceans could affect HAB occurrences and toxicity as well, although forecasting the possible trends is still speculative and requires intensive multidisciplinary research. At the beginning of the 21st century, with expanding human populations, particularly in coastal and developing countries, mitigating HABs impacts on human health and wellbeing is becoming a more pressing public health need. The available tools to address this global challenge include maintaining intensive, multidisciplinary and collaborative scientific research, and strengthening the coordination with stakeholders, policymakers and the general public. Here we provide an overview of different aspects of the HABs phenomena, an important element of the intrinsic links between oceans and human health and wellbeing.

This paper provides for the first time data on age and growth of Remora osteochir, also describing its sagittal otolith together with other biological and ecological aspects. Overall, 236 individuals of marlin sucker were collected in the southern-central Mediterranean Sea, from 2008 to 2009. All samples were hosted by the Mediterranean spearfish, Tetrapturus belone, caught by surface longline and harpoon. Analysis of gonads identified a reproductive peak during June and July. The estimated growth parameters according to the von Bertalanffy equation were: L∞ = 27.37 cm TL, k = 0.248 year−1, t0 = −1.36 year. The length-weight relationship, computed by using eviscerate weight, highlighted an isometric growth for both sexes, as supported by the other results: similar sizes, growth curves and disc length-total length relationship.

Until now only two species of Cladorhiza have been reported from the SW Atlantic, namely C. diminuta and C. inversa, despite a total of 39 species reported from various parts of the globe. Here we describe a new species, C. nicoleae sp. nov., dredged from 750 m depth on the continental slope off SE Brazil during the French RV ‘Marion Dufresne’ expedition in 1987. It is an erect, pedunculated and club-shaped sponge, 26 mm high and with 12 radially arranged whip-like projections (each up to 3 mm long). The new species differs from its closest relative, C. inversa (redescribed here), by its possession of sigmas and sigmancistras. The holotype of Cladorhiza inversa is also a pedunculated sponge, 1.9 cm tall, with a cup-shaped body with an apical spur-like continuation of the stem and a crown of 16 projections (up to 8 mm long) radiating from the rim of the body.

Amiantis purpurata shells from the San Matías Gulf (SMG) were analysed in order to compare both morphology and size throughout the late Quaternary in relation to environmental changes. Shells from modern beaches, Holocene marine assemblages (late Holocene, 3630 ± 100 years bp) and interglacial Pleistocene marine assemblages (MIS 5, 100 ka years bp) were studied by measuring the height and length, and using the elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) to take an outline contour. The Pleistocene shells were smaller, more elliptical and with a deeper lunule than the Holocene and modern ones. No significant differences were recorded in the allometry index throughout the late Quaternary. The variation in size and shape of the A. purpurata shells could be related to the phenotypic plasticity of this species as a response to the environmental changes registered in the SMG during the Quaternary. These changes include variations in sea surface temperatures, salinities and substrates, and also water circulation changes, which would have modified nutrient availability. Morphological changes imply burrowing activity, mechanical stability, nutrient uptake and defence response to predation.

The present study reports morphometric relationships and discusses the relative growth in the banded murex (Hexaplex trunculus) and the purple dye murex (Bolinus brandaris) from the Ria Formosa lagoon (southern Portugal). A total of 11 morphometric parameters (eight linear variables: shell length, shell width, total aperture length, aperture length, aperture width, spire length, spire width and siphonal canal length; three ponderal variables: total weight, soft parts weight and shell weight) were analysed in both species. The analyses comprised numerous individuals of both sexes and with broad size ranges (H. trunculus: 10.7–82.8 mm shell length; B. brandaris: 14.6–107.7 mm shell length), fairly representative of the populations from the Ria Formosa lagoon. In general, B. brandaris exhibited greater morphological plasticity and higher variability in shell shape compared with H. trunculus. In both species, the vast majority of morphometric relationships displayed positive allometries, distantly followed by negative allometries and by isometries. Although H. trunculus and B. brandaris are known to lack external sexual dimorphism, several morphometric relationships revealed significant differences in the type of growth between sexes, which should be further confirmed using more powerful techniques, such as geometric morphometric analyses of shell shape.

The life history of the Japanese sternaspid polychaete Sternaspis costata von Marenzeller, 1879 was investigated in the inner part of Ariake Bay from May 2010 to May 2011, with additional sampling in July and September 2011. All the worms were measured by the width of the ventral shield (WS) as an indicator of body size, and their coelomic contents were also examined. Ovigerous females occurred throughout the year, except during October and March, with the highest ovigerous rate (number of ovigerous females/number of adults with a WS larger than that of the smallest ovigerous female, i.e. 1.8 mm) noted in September (43.8% in 2010, 34.7% in 2011). The ovigerous rate was less than 10% in the other months, except in April 2011 (30%). Although the coelomic oocytes ranged from 90 to 160 μm in diameter, the diameters of most of the oocytes were 140–160 μm in September. The number of adults drastically decreased from September to October, suggesting that most of the adults died after spawning in the major reproductive period, although a small fraction of adults seemed to reproduce earlier or later. A cohort of recruits with an approximately 1.2 mm WS was identified in March and April. Most of the recruits grew to adult size in July–September, when many ovigerous females occurred. These results indicated that this species is fundamentally semelparous, with longevity around 1 year, and they mostly reproduce in September, with a few adults reproducing almost throughout the year.

Worldwide, infectious diseases represent a leading cause of death and disability. Exposure to the ocean, whether through recreation or occupation, represents a potentially significant, but poorly understood, source of infectious diseases in man. This review describes the potential mechanisms whereby marine bathing could lead to infectious diseases in man. Sources of pathogens in the marine environment are described, including human sewage, animal sources, fellow bathers and indigenous marine organisms. The epidemiological evidence for the association between marine bathing and infectious disease is presented, including a consideration of the differing relationship between faecal indicator bacteria levels and illness at point source compared with non-point source settings. Estimating the burden of infectious disease is reliant on public health surveillance, both formal and informal, which is described from a UK perspective in this review. Potential emerging threats at the marine–human interface are discussed, including infections caused by Shewanella and Vibrio bacteria, and the presence of human pathogens in the marine environment that are resistant to antimicrobials.

Sponge species are infamously difficult to identify for non-experts due to their high morphological plasticity and the paucity of informative morphological characters. The use of molecular techniques certainly helps with species identification, but unfortunately it requires prior reference sequences. Holotypes constitute the best reference material for species identification, however their usage in molecular systematics and taxonomy is scarce and frequently not even attempted, mostly due to their antiquity and preservation history. Here we provide case studies in which we demonstrate the importance of using holotype material to answer phylogenetic and taxonomic questions. We also demonstrate the possibility of sequencing DNA fragments out of century-old holotypes. Furthermore we propose the deposition of DNA sequences in conjunction with new species descriptions.

A new species, Myrianida paredesi, and new records of Myrianida pentadentata (Imajima, 1966), and Procerarea micropedata (Hartmann-Schöder, 1962), are described from the central coast of Peru. Myrianida paredesi is characterized by the presence of an additional mid-dorsal, digitiform structure, quite similar to a dorsal cirrus (unique among all syllids), a subtriangular prostomium with a posterior region extended to middle peristomium, pharynx with a single elongated sinuation and a trepan with 14–15 equal teeth in a single ring. Descriptions of male and female stolons are also provided. The phylogenetic position of the new species within Myrianida is determined using molecular data, suggesting it is closely related to the species that share the presence of one ciliary troch per segment (except M. pachycera; unknown in M. australiensis), moderate number of equal teeth on trepan (except M. pachycera), and the mode of reproduction.

Descriptions of the collected specimens of Myrianida pentadentata (Imajima, 1966), and Proceraea micropedata (Hartmann-Schröder, 1962), both new reports to Peru, are also included.
