This paper studies a discrete-time single-server queue with two independent inputs and service interruptions. One of the inputs to the queue is an independent and identically distributed process. The other is a much more general process and it is not required to be Markov nor is it required to be stationary. The service interruption process is also general and it is not required to be Markov or to be stationary. This paper shows that a stochastic decomposition property for the virtual waiting-time process holds in the discrete-time single-server queue with service interruptions. To the best of the author's knowledge, no stochastic decomposition results for virtual waiting-time processes in non-work-conserving queues, such as queues with service interruptions, have been obtained before and only work-conserving queues have been studied in the literature.

It is a stylized fact that estimators in extreme-value theory suffer from serious bias. Moreover, graphical representations of extremal data often show erratic behaviour. In the statistical literature it is advised to use a Box–Cox transformation in order to make data more suitable for statistical analysis. We provide some of the theoretical background to see the effect of such transformations and to investigate under what circumstances they might be helpful.

We derive in this paper closed formulae for the joint probability generating function of the number of customers in the two FIFO queues of a generalized processor-sharing (GPS) system with two classes of customers arriving according to Poisson processes and requiring exponential service times. In contrast to previous studies published on the GPS system, we show that it is possible to establish explicit expressions for the generating functions of the number of customers in each queue without calling for the formulation of a Riemann–Hilbert problem. We specifically prove that the problem of determining the unknown functions due to the reflecting conditions on the boundaries of the positive quarter plane can be reduced to a Poisson equation. The explicit formulae are then used to derive some characteristics of the GPS system (in particular the tails of the probability distributions of the numbers of customers in each queue).

The aim of this paper is to analyze the probabilistic structure for a rather general class of bilinear models systematically. First, the sufficient and necessary conditions for stationarity are given with a concise expression. Then both the autocovariance function and the spectral density function are obtained. The Yule–Walker-type difference equations for autocovariances are derived by means of the spectral density function. Concerning the second-order probabilistic structure, the model is similar to an ARMA model. The third-order probabilistic structure for the model is discussed and a group of Yule–Walker-type difference equations for third-order cumulants are discovered.

The stochastic process resulting when pairs of events are formed from two point processes is a rich source of questions. When the two point processes have different rates, the resulting stochastic process has a mean drift towards either -∞ or +∞. However, when the two processes have equal rates, we end up with a null-recurrent Markov chain and this has interesting behavior. We study this process for both discrete and continuous times and consider special cases with applications in communications networks. One interesting result for applications is the waiting time of a packet waiting for a token, a special case of this pair-formation process. Pair formation by two independent Poisson processes of equal rates results in a point process that is asymptotically a Poisson process of the same rate.

A stochastic process is locally stationary if its covariance function can be expressed as the product of a positive function multiplied by a stationary covariance. In this paper, we characterize nonstationary stochastic processes that can be reduced to local stationarity via a bijective deformation of the time index, and we give the form of this deformation under smoothness assumptions. This is an extension of the notion of stationary reducibility. We present several examples of nonstationary covariances that can be reduced to local stationarity. We also investigate the particular situation of exponentially convex reducibility, which can always be achieved for a certain class of separable nonstationary covariances.

We introduce adaptive-simulation schemes for estimating performance measures for stochastic systems based on the method of control variates. We consider several possible methods for adaptively tuning the control-variate estimators, and describe their asymptotic properties. Under certain assumptions, including the existence of a ‘perfect control variate’, all of the estimators considered converge faster than the canonical rate of n −1/2, where n is the simulation run length. Perfect control variates for a variety of stochastic processes can be constructed from ‘approximating martingales’. We prove a central limit theorem for an adaptive estimator that converges at rate A similar estimator converges at rate n −1. An exponential rate of convergence is also possible under suitable conditions.

We present several results refining and extending those of Neuts and Alfa on weak convergence of the pair-formation process when arrivals follow two independent Poisson processes. Our results are obtained using a different, more straightforward, and apparently simpler probabilistic approach. Firstly, we give a very short proof of the fact that the convergence of the pair-formation process to a Poisson process actually holds in total variation (with a bound for convergence rate). Secondly, we extend the result of the theorem to the case of multiple labels: there are d independent arrival Poisson processes, and we are looking at the epochs when d-tuples are formed. Thirdly, we extend the original (weak convergence) result to the case when arrivals follow independent renewal processes (this extension is also valid for the d-tuple formation).

This paper presents a single-server loss queueing system where customers arrive according to a Poisson process. Upon arrival, the customer presents itself to a gatekeeper who has to decide whether to admit the customer into the system without knowing the busy–idle status of the server. There is a cost if the gatekeeper blocks a customer, and a larger cost if an admitted customer finds the server busy and therefore has to leave the system. The goal of the gatekeeper is to minimize the total expected discounted cost on an infinite time horizon. In the case of an exponential service distribution, we show that a threshold-type policy—block for a time period following each admission and then admit the next customer—is optimal. For general service distributions, we show that a threshold-type policy need not be optimal; we then present a sufficient condition for the existence of an optimal threshold-type policy.

The paper studies convergence of sequences of negatively associated random variables under various summability methods. The results extend previously known results for independence and complement known results for ϕ-mixing.

In this paper we use the exit time theory for Lévy processes to derive new closed-form results for the busy period distribution of finite-capacity fluid M/G/1 queues. Based on this result, we then obtain the busy period distribution for finite-capacity queues with on–off inputs when the off times are exponentially distributed.

When can one find a smooth transformation of a random variable so that the transformed random variable has a specified distribution? If the random variable is continuous, the solution is elementary; if it is discrete, it may be impossible. In this paper, a simple method is given of transforming a random variable in a smooth way to match a specified number of quantiles of an arbitrary distribution. The problem arose from a request for a simple way of transforming marks given in school assessment so that the distribution of transformed marks matches the distribution of external assessment.

In this article, we analyse the error induced by the Euler scheme combined with a symmetry procedure near the boundary for the simulation of diffusion processes with an oblique reflection on a smooth boundary. This procedure is easy to implement and, in addition, accurate: indeed, we prove that it yields a weak rate of convergence of order 1 with respect to the time-discretization step.

Disaster arrival into a queueing system causes all customers to leave the system instantaneously. We present a numerically stable algorithm for calculating the stationary state distribution of an embedded Markov chain for the BMAP/SM/1 queue with a MAP input of disasters.

Consider a countable list of files updated according to the move-to-front rule. Files have independent random weights, which are used to construct request probabilities. Exact and asymptotic formulae for the Laplace transform of the stationary search cost are given for i.i.d. weights. Similar expressions are derived for the first two moments. Some results are extended to the case of independent weights.

We consider an incomplete market model whose stock price fluctuation is given by a jump diffusion process. For this model, we calculate the density process of the minimal martingale measure. Also, we state the relation to a locally risk-minimizing strategy.

We investigate some effects that the ‘light' trimming of a sum Sn = X1 + X2 + · ·· + Xn of independent and identically distributed random variables has on behaviour of iterated logarithm type. Light trimming is defined as removing a constant number of summands from Sn. We consider two versions: (r)Sn, which is obtained by deleting the r largest Xi from Sn, and , which is obtained by deleting the r variables Xi which are largest in absolute value from Sn. We summarise some relevant results from Rogozin (1968), Heyde (1969), and later writers concerning the untrimmed sum, and add some new results concerning trimmed sums. Among other things we show that a general form of the law of the iterated logarithm holds for but not (completely) for .

We consider an M/GI/1 queue with two types of customers, positive and negative, which cancel each other out. The server provides service to either a positive customer or a negative customer. In such a system, the queue length can be either positive or negative and an arrival either joins the queue, if it is of the same sign, or instantaneously removes a customer of the opposite sign at the end of the queue or in service. This study is a generalization of Gelenbe's original concept of a queue with negative customers, where only positive customers need services and negative customers arriving at an empty system are lost or need no service. In this paper, we derive the transient and the stationary probability distributions for the major performance measures in terms of generating functions and Laplace transforms. It has been shown that the previous results for the system with negative arrivals of zero service time are special cases of our model. In addition, we obtain the stationary waiting time distribution of this system in terms of a Laplace transform.

We consider random dynamical systems with randomly chosen jumps on infinite-dimensional spaces. The choice of deterministic dynamical systems and jumps depends on a position. The system generalizes dynamical systems corresponding to learning systems, Poisson driven stochastic differential equations, iterated function system with infinite family of transformations and random evolutions. We will show that distributions which describe the dynamics of this system converge to an invariant distribution. We use recent results concerning asymptotic stability of Markov operators on infinite-dimensional spaces obtained by T. Szarek.

In this paper, we study Markov fluid queues where the net fluid rate to a single-buffer system varies with respect to the state of an underlying continuous-time Markov chain. We present a novel algorithmic approach to solve numerically for the steady-state solution of such queues. Using this approach, both infinite- and finite-buffer cases are studied. We show that the solution of the infinite-buffer case is reduced to the solution of a generalized spectral divide-and-conquer (SDC) problem applied on a certain matrix pencil. Moreover, this SDC problem does not require the individual computation of any eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Via the solution for the SDC problem, a matrix-exponential representation for the steady-state queue-length distribution is obtained. The finite-buffer case, on the other hand, requires a similar but different decomposition, the so-called additive decomposition (AD). Using the AD, we obtain a modified matrix-exponential representation for the steady-state queue-length distribution. The proposed approach for the finite-buffer case is shown not to have the numerical stability problems reported in the literature.
