Effect of dose and time of atrazine application on weed infestation and yield of fodder sorghum

Summary

A field experiment comprising four rates of application of atrazine (0·25, 0·50, 0·75 and 1·0 kg/ha), three times of application (pre-emergence, 10 days after emergence and 20 days after emergence) and two additional treatments of unweeded and weedfree-crop was conducted at the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal during the rainy seasons of 1979 and 1981. Application of atrazine at 0·25 and 0·5 kg/ha preemergence and 10 days after emergence gave effective control of weeds and resulted in green and dry fodder yields of sorghum similar to weed-free conditions. It was noted that pre-emergence application of the atrazine at 1·0 kg/ha showed a phytotoxic effect on sorghum and resulted in significant reduction in green and dry fodder yields compared with 0·5 kg atrazine/ha.
