It is said that when Hulegu hesitated to execute the last Abbasid caliph Tusi talked his new master out of his scruples by pointing out that even the decapitation of John the Baptist and the murderers of ᶜAli and Husayn had not been avenged by terrible divine punishment. Hence the caliph met his end by throttling, as the Mongols did not want to spill his blood.
