A decision-making sampling plan was developed to initiate new and validate ongoing area-wide red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) integrated pest management (IPM) programmes in date palm plantations of Saudi Arabia based on the concept of sequential sampling. Spatial distribution studies revealed that R. ferrugineus population was aggregated and followed the negative binomial series with a mean aggregation index (common K) value of 3.56. In the sampling plan developed, young date palms are inspected in a sequence in units of 100 palms (1 ha) until an accurate decision on the infestation level can be made. The plan rates infestations as low and high if d0 ≤ 0.478n − 7.519 and d1 ≥ 0.478n+7.519, respectively, where d0 and d1 are the cumulative maximum and minimum infested palms per ha (100 young palms) for not recommending and recommending area-wide management of R. ferrugineus, respectively, and n is the area sampled in ha. In this sampling plan, if 100 palms are inspected and eight or more infestations are detected, then area-wide R. ferrugineus IPM is required. On a 100 ha scale (10,000 palms) the plan becomes stricter and permits only 55 infestations.

The influence of two photoperiods (14L:10D and 24L:0D) and four wavelengths of light [white (control), blue (c. 475 ran), yellow (c. 570 nm) and red (c. 650nm)] on development and reproduction of the ladybird, Propylea dissecta (Mulsant), was investigated. The photoperiod of 14L:10D and the white-light wavelength recorded fastest development, maximum survival and reproduction. The developmental and reproductive Performance decreased in the order white > yellow > blue > red. The effect of the wavelength is probably due to the differential predatory response under different coloured arenas.

Upland rice is mostly at risk from soil-borne insect pests, including termites, which cause significant crop yield losses. Studies were conducted in 2005 and 2006 at Ikenne, southwest Nigeria to assess the effectiveness of two traditional practices (cow dung and red palm oil mixed with pawpaw), two plant extracts (neem seed oil and neem powder) and Furadan coated with garri (cassava flour) against termite attacks on nine rice varieties—NERICAs 1–7, LAC 23 and OS 6. In 2005, the results showed that neem seed oil was more effective than neem powder and cow dung in the control of termites. Of the five treatments in 2006 (Furadan coated with garri, neem seed oil, neem powder, cow dung and red palm oil mixed with pawpaw), two treatments—neem seed oil and Furadan coated with garri—gave the best protection against termite attack. Among the rice varieties, termite attack was significantly lower on NERICA 5 than on the other NERICA varieties in both years. NERICA 5 was apparently the least attacked by termites when unprotected, indicating that it could be used as a resistant check variety for termites. Yield losses were lower in the treated than in the control plots. These findings indicate that botanicals, such as neem seed oil, can provide effective control against termites on rice fields and can also be used as alternatives to persistent chemical pesticides. This study has far-reaching implications because neem seed oil is environmentally safe, easy to prepare, readily available and affordable by resource-poor farmers in Nigeria.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays various roles in insect immunity: as a cytotoxic component and as a signalling molecule; and immune-reactive lysozymes (IrLys) provide a first line of humoral immune functions against invading bacteria. Although there is considerable literature on eicosanoid and biogenic monoamine actions on insect immunity, there is no information on the role(s) of these chemicals in inducing NO and IrLys. We addressed this gap by challenging third instar Sarcophaga (Liopygia) argyrostoma (Robineau-Desvoidy) with the Gram-positive bacterium Micrococcus luteus. Here, we report that bacterial challenge induces elevation of NO and IrLys concentrations in haemocytes and in the fat body. The plasma pool content is comparatively low. Eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors (EBIs) lead to suppression of both NO and IrLys levels. Control larvae have low constitutive levels of NO and lysozyme concentrations. Octopamine (OA) elicits elevation of NO and IrLys concentrations. A similar effect is obtained by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) for NO. These data indicate immune-mediating roles of eicosanoids, OA and 5-HT in NO and IrLys activities.

Hand-stinging and mass exposure methods of rearing the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera:Braconidae) on the stem borer host, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), were compared. The proportion of hosts successfully parasitised, progeny production, proportion of female progeny, and host mortality did not differ between the two methods. However, there was evidence of superparasitism of mass-exposed hosts. Releases of C. flavipes as adults and as cocoons were both effective methods for field colonisation of the parasitoid. A device for the release of C. flavipes in the cocoon stage is described.

During the two years research 1983–1985 on traditional maize granaries in Togo, we studied three methods for loss assessment which are discussed by the FAO: the count and weigh method, the standard volume/weight method and the thousand-grain mass method.

In general, between 80 and 90% of the overall losses were caused by insect feedings. Besides Prostephanus truncatus (Horn), the most important storage pests were Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.), Tribolium spp. and Cathartus quadricollis (Guèr.). Best results were given by the count and weigh method. The significantly highest losses of dry weight (12–13%) were found after 6 months in stored hybrids. At the same time, local varieties appeared much more adapted to traditional storage methods, exhibiting losses of only 3% under the same conditions. Lowest level of losses (<1%) were observed in regularly smoked granaries in the mountain regions. The mean losses of dry weight during primary season were found to be 6.4% after 6 months, while after a storage period of 4 months during the secondary season, losses were as high as 8%. In Togo, P. truncatus was observed for the first time in spring 1984. Because of the different damage P. truncatus causes on corn, a newly developed sample weight method was examined in an additional test. After 6 months of observation, this dangerous pest caused serious losses up to 30.2%.

Trioza erytreae Del Guercio (Hemiptera: Triozidae) has been reported to be a major vector of the African huanglongbing, a form of citrus greening disease. In the tropical regions of Africa, factors regulating population changes of the pest within citrus orchards and plantations are almost unknown. This study carried out in an experimental plot of citrus orchard in Yaoundé, Cameroon, aimed at monitoring some climate and edaphic factors, which regulate the population changes of the pest. From January 1992 to December 1993, psyllids were counted weekly on flushing shoots and buds from 65 ten-year-old citrus trees. In 1992, the psyllid population changes revealed eight generations with three main peaks (January–March, April–September and September–December), and only three generations with one peak in 1993 (October–December). Among climate factors studied, higher maximum temperatures and saturation deficit index were negatively correlated with psyllid population. The shoot flushing rhythm within citrus trees was also highly correlated with psyllid population. In 1993, citrus trees were not weeded and no fertilizer was applied, and this led to disappearance of the pest from the plot and to a decreased number of annual generations from eight recorded in 1992 to three in 1993. Results from this study represent an important step towards the citrus psyllid ecology and the development of an integrated pest management programme for its control, with regard to weather conditions, cultural practices and host plant relationships.

Trapping of adult red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier using food-baited pheromone traps is a major component of the integrated pest management strategy currently adopted against the RPW in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Field trials were carried out in RPW-infested date plantations of Al-Rahba, Abu Dhabi, UAE from January to December 2010 to ascertain the combined influence of ethyl acetate (EA) and trap colours on weevil captures in RPW pheromone traps. Weevil captures were recorded throughout the experimental period with a sex ratio (male:female) of 1:2.2 and capture rates of 25.13 and 15.14 weevils/trap/month in traps with and without EA, respectively. Furthermore, treatments with black-coloured traps recorded significantly higher weevil captures.

Onion thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lindeman), is a prominent species infesting onion and tomato in the northern highlands of Tanzania. It causes considerable leaf damage by direct feeding and also transmits the Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV). Hence, one of the objectives of this study was to identify the most resistant onion entries against T. tabaci. One highly resistant (VI038552) and two resistant onion entries (VI038512 and AVON 1067) were identified against T. tabaci. Besides thrips resistance, the bulb size of VI038512 was also equivalent to one of the commercial varieties, Texas. The highly resistant VI038552 recorded the highest yield, followed by the resistant entry, VI038512. However, the yield of AVON 1067 was significantly lower. Elucidation of the biophysical bases of resistance revealed that there was a significant negative correlation between leaf angle as well as leaf toughness and thrips damage. The total epicuticular wax content in the leaves had a weak and non-significant negative relationship with thrips damage. The scanning electron microscopic study confirmed that the wax crystals occurred as filaments, rods, platelets, tubes and complex dendritic structures, and that they were densely arranged in resistant or moderately resistant entries. Studies on the biochemical basis of resistance confirmed that there was a significant negative relationship between total phenol content and thrips damage. Similarly, the relationship between total foliar amino acids or total sugars and thrips damage was inversely correlated and non-significant. Hence, entries VI038552 and VI038512 could be promising candidates for breeding programmes aimed at developing onion varieties that are resistant to thrips and that are high yielding, which will help to enhance the productivity of onions in sub-Saharan Africa.

The biology of Neoseiulus barkeri (Hughes), Typhlodromus balanites El-Badry and Amblyseius zaheri Yousef & El-Borolossy was studied using Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs as food source. For N. barkeri, the development was faster and reproduction was higher than for A. zaheri. Survival of immatures of T. balanites was low on eggs of E. kuehniella and all failed to develop to adulthood. A total of 50.4 and 41.0 eggs per female were obtained when N. barkeri and A. zaheri were fed on moth eggs, respectively. A diet of E. kuehniella eggs provided the highest female longevity and mean total fecundity, which resulted in the highest net reproductive rate (Ro = 32.88), intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm = 0.139) and finite rate of increase (λ = 1.149) for N. barkeri. The mean generation time ranged between 24.65 and 25.03 days for A. zaheri and N. barkeri, respectively. The sex ratio of the progeny was strongly female biased (female/total = 0.69 and 0.58) when eggs of E. kuehniella were provided for N. barkeri and A. zaheri.

Triatoma virus (TrV) is a small, non-enveloped virus that has a+ssRNA genome and is currently classified under the Cripavirus genus of the Dicistroviridae family. TrV infects haematophagous triatomine insects (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), which are vectors of American trypanosomosis (Chagas disease). TrV can be transmitted through the horizontal faecal–oral route, and causes either deleterious sublethal effects or even the death of laboratory insect colonies. Various species of triatomines from different regions of Latin America are currently being reared in research laboratories, with little or no awareness of the presence of TrV; therefore, any biological conclusion drawn from experiments on insects infected with this virus is inherently affected by the side effects of its infection. In this study, we developed a mathematical model to estimate the sample size required for detecting a TrV infection. We applied this model to screen the infection in the faeces of triatomines belonging to insectaries from 13 Latin American countries, carrying out the identification of TrV by using RT-PCR. TrV was detected in samples coming from Argentina, which is where the virus was first isolated from Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) several years ago. Interestingly, several colonies from Brazil were also found infected with the virus. This positive result widens the TrV's host range to a total of 14 triatomine species. Our findings suggest that many triatomine species distributed over a large region of South America may be naturally infected with TrV.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is amongst the most important grain legume crops in Africa in general, and Ethiopia in particular. The Mexican been weevil (Zabrotes subfasciatus Boheman) heavily attacks the grain of common bean. A total of 300 common bean entries were subjected to a ‘no-choice’ test at Melkassa Agricultural Research Centre, Ethiopia, using a randomized complete block design with three replications, to evaluate for resistance to the Mexican bean weevil. Data on insect and seed traits were collected and a significant level (P<0.01) of variation in all parameters measured was observed amongst genotypes. Relative resistance was recorded in landraces, improved genotypes and breeding lines, but the resistant genotypes, RAZ-11, RAZ-36, RAZ-2, RAZ-44, RAZ-120, RAZ-40 and MAZ-203, showed consistently complete resistance, with zero index of susceptibility value. Two other promising entries were also identified from the breeding lines (SCR-11) and landrace collections (NC-16) of Ethiopia. Stratified ranking diagrams showed that accessions from different eco-geographical origins in Ethiopia and those with different colours showed different patterns of response to infestation. The Ethiopian bean breeding programme should take up the resistant genotypes for a comprehensive yield trial at the national level and direct release them as commercial varieties. The incorporation of bean weevil resistance genes into adapted varieties through backcross breeding techniques, supported with marker assisted selection, seems to be the best strategy not only in terms of time saving but also in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

Annual losses of cocoa in Ghana from mirids are significant; therefore, accurate timing of insecticide application is critical to enhance yields. However, cocoa farmers often lack information on the expected mirid population for each season to enable them to optimize pesticide use. This study assessed farmers' knowledge and perceptions of mirid control and their willingness to use forecasting systems informing them of the expected mirid peaks and the time of pesticide application. A total of 280 farmers were interviewed in the Eastern and Ashanti regions of Ghana with a structured open- and closed-ended questionnaire. Most farmers (87%) considered mirids the most important insect pest on cocoa, with 47% of them attributing 30–40% of annual crop losses to mirid damage. There was a wide variation in the timing of insecticide application as a result of farmers using different sources of information to guide the start of application. The majority of farmers (56%) did not have access to information about the type, frequency and timing of insecticide use. However, respondents who were members of farmer groups had better access to such information. Extension officers were the preferred channel for information transfer to farmers, with 72% of farmers preferring them to other available methods of communication. Almost all the respondents (99%) saw the need for a comprehensive forecasting system to help farmers manage cocoa mirids. The importance of the accurate timing of mirid control based on forecasted information to farmer groups and extension officers is discussed.

The study reported examined mechanisms of pollen transfer within the genus Lagenaria, including insect vectors in the natural and cropped field environment. The major flower visitors to Lagenaria were observed for 10 months, from June 2001 to April 2002 at five sites, namely the Botanic Garden of the National Museums of Kenya, three farmers' crop fields in Dungicha village in Kilifi District, Katitika and Wayowani villages in Kitui District and the home garden of one of the authors, in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya. Twenty-two species of insects represented in four orders belonging to 10 families were found to be the major visitors of L. siceraria flowers. From the foraging patterns of the flower visitors, visiting frequencies and development of fruits, four groups of flower visitors comprising hawkmoths (Hippotion celerio, Agrius convolvuli), moths A–D (Noctuidae spp.), skipper butterfly (Gorgyra johnstoni) and honeybee (Apis mellifera) were considered active flower visitors. Hawkmoths were suspected to be the major pollinators of this plant in the locations surveyed.

Pollination ecology was investigated in Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai, which is a species vulnerable to pollinator loss. It was found that this species depends heavily on the honeybee, Apis mellifera L., as the main pollinator. Other pollen vectors identified include Xylocopa bees, halictid bees, Hypotrigona bees, flies and beetles. Phenologically, the plant was found to promote male fitness by producing numerous male flowers, which serve as pollinator attracting structures. Blooming sequence and A. mellifera visitation rates to these flowers are presented. This will enable farmers and pollination managers to better understand visitation patterns and to safeguard pollinators during pesticide application schedules.

Occurrence of protozoa in the digestive tract of herbivores is dependent upon the occurrence of an environmentally compatible section of the tract and a retention time for gut contents in that section which exceeds the protozoan generation time. In general, herbivores can be classified as pre-gastric (foregut) or post-gastric (hindgut) fermentors. Fermentation in the foregut has evolved through enlargement of the stomach in some way to slow down ingesta passage rate and provide physical separation of the ingesta from the acid-secreting regions, as well as an adequate production of buffered saliva. Hindgut fermentations occur in the caecum-proximal colon area. Most of the protozoa in the digestive tract of herbivorous mammals belong to the class Kinetofragminophorea in the orders Prostomatida, Trichostomatida and Entodiniomorphida. They are anaerobic, live in conjunction with a large bacterial population and can ferment the structural polysaccharides of plants. End products of protozoal fermentation are similar to those of the bacterial population, i.e. volatile fatty acids, lactic acid, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Additional products of the fermentation are vitamins and microbial protein which are subsequently utilized by foregut fermentors, whereas these products are essentially lost in hindgut fermentors unless they practice coprophagy. Only limited information is available on digestive and metabolic pathways of the gut protozoa, primarily because of our inability to grow them in axenic culture. Specific faunas appear to be associated with site of fermentation, animal species and diet. Diet in turn can affect pH and contents turnover time, both of which are very important in the establishment and growth of a protozoan population in the digestive tract.

Pest control strategies against Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) using protease inhibitors have relied on the gut protease profile of the later larval stages of the insect, with serine proteases being considered predominant. Little is known about the gut protease profile of early larval instars. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to detect the levels of gut protease activities in the third-, fourth-, fifth- and late fifth-instar larvae of H. armigera reared on an artificial diet using specific substrates and inhibitors. The analysis of the gut protease profiles of different instars revealed different levels of protease activities at different instar stages. Significant variations were also observed in the specific activities of trypsin, chymotrypsin, cysteine protease, carboxypeptidase-A and aminopeptidase-N across the instars. In general, the activities of the proteases increased from the third to the fifth instar and then decreased at the onset of pupation in the late fifth instar. Proteolytic activity was optimal at pH 12 for gut extracts from the third-, fourth- and fifth-instar larvae. Bioassays with phenylmethylsulphonyl fluoride (PMSF), a serine–cysteine protease inhibitor, revealed high mortality, and that with sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA-Na), a metalloprotease inhibitor, also showed retarded larval growth. The inhibition induced by 0.05% PMSF and 0.05% EDTA-Na in combination was similar to that induced by 0.1% PMSF alone.

Female-biased sex ratios in Danaus chrysippus (Linnaeus) (family Nymphalidae, subfamily Danainae, tribe Danaini) populations are attributed to the action of an endosymbiotic ‘male-killer’ bacterium of the genus Spiroplasma. In stark contrast to the extensive geographic range of their host, the Spiroplasma appears to be restricted to East Africa, where four African D. chrysippus subspecies exist sympatrically and form a hybrid zone. In this study, specimens collected at three sample sites within the hybrid zone were screened for Spiroplasma infection. The findings demonstrate that, within the hybrid zone, the frequency of Spiroplasma infection varies both spatially and temporally. Host genotype at three biallelic wing pattern loci, representative of subspecific genetic divergence, is correlated to Spiroplasma infection. Linkage between the frequency of the recessive a allele and Spiroplasma is established, suggesting the presence of a linked allele controlling infection susceptibility. In addition, a negative correlation between D. chrysippus forewing length and Spiroplasma infection is identified, suggesting that infection has a deleterious effect on body size.

Pestalotiopsis is a disease that causes damage to the leaves of Elaeis guineensis Jacquin and defoliation in commercial plantations. Lepidoptera larvae are the main insects that spread the disease. The aim of this paper is to report for the first time the insects found in oil palm plantations in Colombia. Lepidoptera larvae were collected from cultures in the presence of Pestalotiopsis and were identified to species level. Severity and duration of the symptoms of Pestalotiopsis were evaluated from the damage caused by the insects of each species. Eighteen species of the families Dalceridae (one), Elachistidae (four), Limacodidae (eight), Megalopygidae (two), Nymphalidae (one), Psychidae (one) and Saturniidae (one) confirmed assistance and disease transmission. Increased severity of Pestalotiopsis damage was induced by Acharia hyperoche, Acraga ochracea, Durrantia arcanella, Euclea diversa, Euprosterna elaeasa and Stenoma impressella. The development of Pestalotiopsis on the leaves of E. guineensis and its symptoms were observed between 16.8 and 72.9 days. The damage caused by these insects on the leaves of E. guineensis was the main entrance of the virulent fungal spores. The results of this study contribute to the knowledge of Lepidoptera that attend and spread the Pestalotiopsis fungus on leaves in oil palm plantations. To our knowledge, no previous records of this disease on the plant are found in Colombia.

Cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. is an important component in mixed cropping systems that are appropriate to the agro-ecological characteristics of the West African savannah. However, the contribution of cowpea to overall productivity of the systems is reduced by a number of insect pest species. Compared with the humid zone, important features of insect pests in the savannah region include: (i) a tendency towards higher pest incidence during the limited growing period, (ii) a more advantageous situation for generalist and migratory pests in the scanty and unstable vegetation and (iii) lower mortality inflicted by parasitoids on the pest populations. The key pests of cowpea of importance in the West African savannah are the legume flower thrips Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), the legume pod borer Maruca vitrata (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and the pod-sucking bug Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stål (Hemiptera: Coreidae). To control these insects in a sustainable manner, pest management practices such as the use of resistant cowpea varieties, mixed cropping systems, botanical and reduced risk insecticides, and biological control assisted by pest monitoring have been developed. Nevertheless, no single component is effective when used alone, but specific combinations can work synergistically. This paper highlights recent progress in integrated pest management strategies for cowpea in cereal-based cropping systems in the West African savannah.
