The resting behaviour of Glossina longipalpis (Wiedemann) and Glossina fusca congolensis (Newstead & Evans) at Oke-Ako, Nigeria

Abstract

Observations of the diurnal resting behaviour of Glossina longipalpis and Glossina fusca congolensis were carried out at Ele forest, Oke-Ako between September 1975 and May 1976 both inclusive. The two species of tsetse were observed resting most frequently on underside of stems and branches with diameter range 1–60 mm. Some G. fusca congolensis rested vertically. Whether resting vertically or obliquely, this species always rested with head pointing downwards. More than 95% of G. longipalpis and G. fusca congolensis rested between the heights of 20–240 cm. Preferred resting objects included shrubs, young saplings, climbers and, during high temperatures, bases of tree trunks.

For control purposes it is suggested from the above information that a discriminative and selective spraying of the area be planned for the late dry season and early rains when fly populations are more concentrated and individual flies tend to rest at lower heights. The spraying which should be directed to the undersurface of resting objects will help to reduce the risk of trypanosomiasis at the Oke-Ako cattle ranch.

Résumé

Des observations sur le comportement diurne de repos de Glossina longipalpis et Glossina fusca congolensis a été exécuté au foret d' Ele, Oke-Ako entre le Septembre 1975 et Mai 1976 inclus. On a observé que les deux espèces de tsetse se reposaient plus fréquemment au-dessous des tiges et des branches qui avaient un diamètre d' 1–60 mm. Quelques-unes des G. fusca congolensis se reposaient verticalement. Quoiqu'elles se reposent verticalement ou obliquement cet espèce se reposaient toujours la tête placée en direction de bas. Plus de 95% de G. longipalpis et de G. fusca congolensis se reposaient entre 20–240 cm de haut. Les objets d'abri préférés comprenaient des atbrisseaux des jeunes arbres, des plantes grimpantes et pendant des hautes températures, les fonds des troncs d' arbres.

Afin de faire le contrôle, on propose sur l'information sus-dite, qu'on forme un project de seringage, discriminatoire et selectif de la région, pendant l'arrière-saison sèche et le commencement des pluies, quand les Mouches individuelles se reposaient aux elevations plus basses. Le seringage qui doit être dirigé au dessous des objets d'abri serait untile à la reduction du risque de trypanosomiase à l'elevage de vaches à Oke-Ako.
