Potentiating Effects of Neem on Nucleopolyhedrovirus Treatment of Spodoptera litura Fab.

Abstract

The effects of neem seed kernel extract (NSKE), neem oil (NO) and nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) of the Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on the mortality, feeding and development of S. litura were evaluated in the laboratory. Dose-dependent mortality was evident after NPV treatment, which also depended on larval age at treatment. Upon combining NPV with neem products, the percentage mortality was enhanced threefold even at reduced concentrations. The NSKE and NO significantly inhibited the growth and development of S. litura, and extended the duration of its larval and pupal stages. Oviposition period, adult longevity and fecundity were significantly reduced following treatment with neem products and with neem + NPV treatment. The efficiencies of conversion of ingested food (ECI) and digested food (ECD) were also significantly decreased by treatment with NSKE, NO and NPV, either alone or in combination.

Des extraits d'amande et l'huile de nim ainsi que le virus polyhédrose nucléaire de Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) ont été utilisés au laboratoire pour évaluer leurs effets sur la mortalité, l'alimentation et le développement chez les larves de ce noctuide. Il a été constaté qu'il existe une étroite relation entre la dose de traitement au virus et la mortalité, qui dépend aussi de l'âge de la larve au moment du traitement. La combinaison du virus avec les produits extraits du nim triplait le taux de mortalité, même à des basses concentrations. Les extraits d'amande et l'huile de nim inhibaient fortement la croissance et le développement de S. litura, et ils allongeaient la durée de l'état larvaire et nymphal. La période de ponte, la longévité des adultes et leur fécondité étaient significativement réduites dans les traitements aux produits à base de nim, soit seuls ou combinés avec le virus. La capacité de conversion de la nourriture ingérée et digérée déclinait dans les traitements aux extraits d'amande et l'huile de nim de même qu'au virus; une fois utilisés isolément ou en combinaison.
