The distribution of Phlebotomus duboscqi with reference to the known foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northern Nigeria

Abstract

A survey of phlebotomine sandflies was carried out in northern Nigeria to determine the distribution of Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) duboscqi which is suspected to be the vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in West Africa. P.(P.) duboscqi was found to be confined to the very dry areas of the Sudan savanna vegetation zone, where it utilizes termite hills as the main breeding habitats in association with rodents and lizards. Rock hyrax were located in some adjacent rocky areas. The restricted distribution range includes locations where cutaneous leishmaniasis has been recorded in Nigeria.

Une étude portent sur les phlébotomes a été affectuée dans le nord du Nigéria, ayant pour but de déterminer la distribution du Phlébotomus (Phlébotomus) duboscqi qui est supposé être vecteur de la leishmaniose cutanée en Afrique de l'Ouest. Selon cette étude, le foisonnement du P.(P.) duboscqi se limite aux régions très sèches de la zone soudanaise de la Savanne, où les termitières constituent son gîte favori de reproduction, en co-habitation avec les rongeurs et lézards. Les hyrax de rochers se trouvaient dans des terrains rocheux environnants. L'étendue restreinte de sa distribution se localise dans les lieux où la leishmaniose cutanée a été enrégistée au Nigéria.
