Aspects of varietal resistance in cowpea to the black cowpea moth, Cydia ptychora (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

Abstract

Cohort tests in screened cages confirmed that the cowpea varieties TVu 2994, TVu 3709, EW/1, BPL-3–1, ER-7 and Vita 5 have promising levels of resistance to Cydia ptychora (Meyrick). The resistance was found to be mainly explained by antixenosis with respect to oviposition.

In no-choice tests in the laboratory, high larval mortality was recorded in TVu 3709 and BPL-3–1. Additionally, comparatively lighter-weight final instar larvae and adult females with reduced fecundity, fertility and longevity were reared from TVu 3709 and TVu 2994. Larvae reared on Vita 5 were slower in developing to adults than on other varieties; they were also relatively lighter in weight, while adults emerging from them showed reduction in size and fecundity. It is therefore concluded that resistance in TVu 3709, TVu 2994, BPL-3–1 and Vita 5 is partly due to larval antibiosis.

Résumé

Des tests de groupe en cages voilées ont confirmé que les variétés de cowpea TVu 2994, TVu 3709, EW/1, BPL-3–1, ER7 et Vita 5 out des niveaux prometteurs de résistance a la Cydia ptychora (Meyrick). La résistance a été confirmée par la principale explication du fait dela mauvais hôte pour l'oviposition.

Dans des tests sans choix en laboratoire, une haute mortalité en larves a été enregistrée en TVu 3709 et BPL-3–1. En outre chez des larves en stade final compatativement de poids plus léger et les femelles adultes de fécondité réduite, la fertilité et la longévité étaient rares de TVu 3709 à 2994. Les larves rares en Vita 5 étaient plus lents dans leur développement adulte qu'en d'autres variétés; elles étaient également relativement plus légères en poids alors gue les adultes dérivées d'elles montrent une réduction en taille et fécondité. On peut donc conclure que la résistance en TVu 3709, TVu 2994, BPL-3–1 et Vita 5 est en partie dûe à larvie des larves.
