Infestation of soybean with two species of pod-sucking bugs

Abstract

Experiments on artificial infestation of soybean with pod-sucking bugs showed that Riptortus dentipes caused more damage to the plant than did Nezara viridula. The density of four insects per plant used was high enough to significantly damage the plant. The reproductive developmental stages of the plant defined as R3, R4 and R5 were sensitive to the pod-sucking bugs studied. Plots infested with R. dentipes adults suffered 72% pod damage compared to 44% pod damage in plots infested with N. viridula. Riptortus dentipes significantly affected the physiology of the plant and reduced grain yield and grain quality. The results also showed that there is potential for biocontrol of pod-sucking bugs.

Résumé

Des expérimentations d'infestation artificielle du soja avec des punaises piqueuses-suceuses de gousses ont montré que Riptortus dentipes a causé plus de dégâts à la plante que Nezara viridula. La densité de 4 insectes par plant utilisée a été suffisante pour causer des dégâts significatifs sur la plante. Les stades de développement de la plante définis comme R3, R4 et R5 ont été sensibles aux insectes piqueurs succeurs étudiés. Les cages infestées avec des adultos de R. dentipes ont souffert de 72% de dégâts des gousses contre 44% de dégâts pour les cages infestées avec N. viridula Riptortus dentipes a affecté significativement la physiologie de la plante ainsi que le poids et la qualité des grains. Les résultats ont aussi montré qu'il existe une possibilité de lutte biologique contre les punaises piqueuses-suceuses des gousses.
