* In response to our query regarding the novelty of this system, the Author replied “I have found only two references in the literature to practices in any way resembling the CSF principle (utilizing the entire bank as a spillway). One is in Iowa, USA, where they insert tiled outlet pipes through the bank to drain off the impounded flood-water, allowing only freak storms to overtop the grass bank. The other reference is in New South Wales, Australia—their ‘Gas absorption’ and ‘Gas spreader’ banks, also their overshot sills and level-sill bank outlet. In all these cases I consider the CSF principle is more desirable in every way. (‘Wild’ flowing involves a different principle.) I would be extremely interested to learn of any other proven practices which employ the CSF principle.”—Ed.
