Les 25 et 26 mars 2021, en pleine pandémie de Covid-19, ont eu lieu deux journées d’études organisées par Sorbonne Université sur la thématique des patients experts, des patients partenaires et de leur intégration dans divers dispositifs de participation en santé. Elles ont réuni des chercheurs canadiens et européens autour du développement de la démocratie en santé, dont les principaux modèles sont issus de ces deux régions. Cette nouvelle forme de gouvernance de la santé invite à la collaboration entre les acteurs classiques politiques et médicaux du champ de la santé et des individus de la société civile organisés ou non en associations. Il s'agit là d'un sujet devenu central dans les domaines de la médecine et des humanités biomédicales, et que le contexte de la pandémie de Covid-19 n'a rendu que plus saillant.

I defend Edith Stein's theory of empathy as an alternative to simulation theories of empathy. Simulation theories of empathy involve using one's own cognitive resources to replicate the mental states of others by imagining being in their situation. I argue that this understanding of empathy is problematic within the context of mental healthcare because it can lead to the co-opting and assimilation of another person's experiences. In response, I maintain that Stein's theory is preferable because it involves appreciating others’ experiences as it is for them, and this alternative account of empathy avoids the assimilation of the experiences of others.

Le processus d'autonomisation des patient.es qui s'opéra en France au cours du XXe siècle peut, artificiellement, être divisé en trois grandes périodes marquées par les principes de solidarité, d'agentivité et d'autorité. Cette tripartition permet de mieux saisir les enjeux de ce mouvement et de comprendre en quoi l'avènement de la démocratie sanitaire, auquel il a abouti au début du XXIe siècle, consiste, par sa dépolitisation des enjeux d'autonomie, au renvoi des patient.es vers une forme de subalternité qu'incarnent, paradoxalement, les nouvelles figures de patient expert ou partenaire.

Despite its importance in various fields, analogical reasoning has not yet received a unified formal representation. Our contribution proposes a general scheme of inference that is compatible with different types of logic (deductive, probabilistic, non-monotonic). Firstly, analogical assessment precisely defines the similarity of two objects according to their properties, in a relative rather than absolute way. Secondly, analogical inference transfers a new property from one object to a similar one, thanks to an over-hypothesis linking two sets of properties. The belief strength in the conclusion is then directly related to the belief strength in this meta-hypothesis.

Les motivations des usagers du système de santé et des acteurs traditionnels à s'engager dans des pratiques participatives diffèrent. Les usagers entendent améliorer l'expérience patient en réduisant les injustices épistémiques et en augmentant les libertés de bien-être, le tout dans une perspective de justice sociale. Six logiques guidant les participations coexistent (utilitariste, méthodologique, démocratique, consumériste, épistémique et émancipatoire), logiques dont la compatibilité n'est pas évidente. Par ailleurs, la démocratie en santé est devenue protéiforme et des tensions apparaissent entre la démocratie représentative et une démocratie participative, de type indirect. Cumuler les profils épistémiques d'usagers et les différentes envies et raisons d'agir, puis les envisager sous le prisme de la complémentarité, pourrait atténuer ces tensions.

Malgré son importance dans divers domaines, le raisonnement par analogie n'a pas encore reçu de représentation formelle unifiée. Notre contribution suggère un schéma d'inférence général compatible avec différentes logiques. Premièrement, une assertion analogique définit la similarité entre deux objets en fonction de leurs propriétés, de façon seulement relative. Deuxièmement, une inférence analogique transfère une propriété nouvelle d'un objet à un objet similaire, grâce à une méta-hypothèse d'arrière-plan qui relie deux ensembles de propriétés. Le degré de croyance dans la conclusion est directement relié au degré de croyance dans cette méta-hypothèse.

When discussing well-being, subject-relative concerns are intuitively important ones. In this article, I argue that Immanuel Kant's theory of well-being can be satisfactorily subject-relative, despite his emphasis on objective moral well-being. Because the specifics of agents’ situations affect agents’ moral endowments, duties regarding moral well-being can be altered for subject-relative reasons. When it comes to thinking about the well-being of others, the important Kantian notion of respect for rational agents ensures that this will be decidedly subject-relative, too, and, what is more, that this will be aimed specifically at natural well-being (happiness).

Après la dispute soutenue à partir des années 1990 sur la question de savoir s'il y a une philosophie chinoise, plusieurs intellectuels chinois, y compris et surtout des philosophes, ont commencé, depuis une dizaine d'années, à se réunir autour d'une problématique plus concrète : « une philosophie en langue chinoise est-elle possible ? » ou « comment raisonner en chinois moderne ? » Parmi de nombreux sujets, celui des « termes transplantés » initié par Chen Jiaying (1952-) a attiré l'attention générale. Cet article compte, en s'appuyant sur son travail, introduire et approfondir ce problème en tant que défi particulier pour la pratique philosophique en chinois.

There is a ubiquitous claim in the grounding literature that metaphysical foundationalism violates the principle of sufficient reason (PSR) in virtue of positing a level of ungrounded facts. I argue that foundationalists can accept the PSR if they are willing to replace fundamentality as independence with completeness and deny that ground is a strict partial order. The upshot is that the PSR can be compatible with both metaphysical foundationalism and metaphysical infinitism, and so presupposing this fixed explanatory demand need not beg the question in favour of either view.

En France, la loi Kouchner (2002) a permis de repenser les droits des patients et a introduit la notion de démocratie sanitaire. En cancérologie, les associations de patients et (ex-)malades ont commencé progressivement à jouer plusieurs rôles (soutien et informations aux malades, représentation dans les institutions de soins et les agences d’État, enseignement auprès des soignants et participation à la recherche). Certains patients choisissent même d'en faire leur métier : c'est cette professionnalisation qui nous intéresse. Nous proposons ici de discuter des premiers résultats de deux recherches en cours sur le sujet.

Hans-Georg Gadamer argues that consciousness not only historically constrains experience but also allows strangeness to intelligibly speak to it. This historically effected and effective consciousness features in Gadamer's idea that a common language is unearthed for the interpretive horizons of those involved in dialogue with each other through a logic of question and answer. I argue, however, that this reveals a conceptual uncertainty about evaluating progress in interpretive understanding. Gadamer's failure to escape from this uncertainty risks the possibility of a problematic relativism. Effectively, even if sufficient interpretation occurs when horizons are infinitely structured, this does not preclude incoherence between a horizon's elements.

Immanuel Kant maintained throughout his life that non-human persons likely exist but he failed to specify how we could recognise them. In this article, I argue (a) that non-human organisms can be considered non-human persons if they can be judged as belonging to a species with a moral vocation, and (b) a species can be judged as having a moral vocation if at least one of its members is able to make what I will call a “moral sacrifice” in which that member sacrifices its physical life for the sake of its moral life.

Les conférences de consensus du National Institute of Health (NIH), aujourd'hui abandonnées, ont servi de modèle pour établir des programmes de développement de consensus similaires dans d'autres pays. L'intérêt épistémique de ce dispositif fut notamment discuté. Cet article vise à examiner deux positions philosophiques opposées au moyen d'une synthèse des arguments adressés à Miriam Solomon par Laszlo Kosolosky et Jeroen Van Bouwel. Une position philosophique intermédiaire laisse ensuite entrevoir l'intérêt méthodologique d'une analyse rétrospective des conférences de consensus du NIH pour évaluer l'impact d'un forum public sur les recommandations in fine transmises aux professionnels de santé et citoyens.

Epistemic uniqueness is the view that there is at most one rational doxastic response to a given batch of evidence E, while epistemic permissiveness is the denial of epistemic uniqueness. As several authors have noted, one of the attractions of epistemic permissiveness is that it allows us to believe that more than one doxastic response may be rationally faultless, and so permits us to respect the epistemic credentials of all parties to a dispute. I argue that permissiveness is unable to deliver on this claimed benefit in many philosophical disputes.

Que signifie concrètement reconnaître et valoriser les savoirs d'expérience dans le cadre de services de psychiatrie orientés vers le rétablissement ? À partir d'une étude des missions confiées aux « médiateurs de santé pairs », et en utilisant la théorie pragmatiste de John Dewey, il s'agit ici d'interroger les conditions de possibilité et les limites d'une institutionnalisation des savoirs des patients. Plutôt que de penser cette institutionnalisation en termes d'intégration d'informations, Dewey nous permet de la penser comme la mise en débat des cadres interprétatifs et des critères d’évaluation du rétablissement.

A legal fiction is a knowingly false assumption that is given effect in a legal proceeding and that participants are not permitted to disprove. I offer a semantic pretence theory that shows how fiction-involving legal reasoning works.

Many powers-realists assume that the powers of objects are identical with the dispositions of objects and, hence, that ‘power’ and ‘disposition’ are interchangeable. In this article, I aim to disentangle dispositions from powers with the goal of getting a better sense of how powers and dispositions relate to one another. I present and defend a modest realism about dispositions built upon a standard strong realism about powers. I argue that each correct disposition-ascription we can make of an object is made true by the manifestations towards which a given power or collection of powers of the object is directed.

Many philosophers have argued that the existence of gratuitous evil is the most serious objection against the existence of an all-perfect God. I argue that the idea of a moral dilemma (or, more accurately, a tragic dilemma) may either (1) provide a moral justification for God to permit the existence of gratuitous evil, or (2) offer a theodicy of divine tragedy to explain why evils in the world are not necessarily gratuitous, or if they are, why they cannot provide a piece of decisive evidence to reject the existence of an all-perfect God.
