We develop a method to compute the generating function of the number of vertices inside certain regions of the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT). The computations are mostly combinatorial in flavour and the main tool is the decomposition of the UIPT into layers, called the skeleton decomposition, introduced by Krikun [20]. In particular, we get explicit formulas for the generating functions of the number of vertices inside hulls (or completed metric balls) centred around the root, and the number of vertices inside geodesic slices of these hulls. We also recover known results about the scaling limit of the volume of hulls previously obtained by Curien and Le Gall by studying the peeling process of the UIPT in [17].

A family of subsets of {1,. . .,n} is called intersecting if any two of its sets intersect. A classical result in extremal combinatorics due to Erdős, Ko and Rado determines the maximum size of an intersecting family of k-subsets of {1,. . .,n}. In this paper we study the following problem: How many intersecting families of k-subsets of {1,. . .,n} are there? Improving a result of Balogh, Das, Delcourt, Liu and Sharifzadeh, we determine this quantity asymptotically for n ≥ 2k+2+2$\sqrt{k\log k}$ and k → ∞. Moreover, under the same assumptions we also determine asymptotically the number of non-trivial intersecting families, that is, intersecting families for which the intersection of all sets is empty. We obtain analogous results for pairs of cross-intersecting families.

An r-uniform hypergraph is called an r-graph. A hypergraph is linear if every two edges intersect in at most one vertex. Given a linear r-graph H and a positive integer n, the linear Turán number exL(n,H) is the maximum number of edges in a linear r-graph G that does not contain H as a subgraph. For each ℓ ≥ 3, let Crℓ denote the r-uniform linear cycle of length ℓ, which is an r-graph with edges e1, . . ., eℓ such that, for all i ∈ [ℓ−1], |ei ∩ ei+1|=1, |eℓ ∩ e1|=1 and ei ∩ ej = ∅ for all other pairs {i,j}, i ≠ j. For all r ≥ 3 and ℓ ≥ 3, we show that there exists a positive constant c = cr,ℓ, depending only r and ℓ, such that exL(n,Crℓ) ≤ cn1+1/⌊ℓ/2⌋. This answers a question of Kostochka, Mubayi and Verstraëte [30]. For even ℓ, our result extends the result of Bondy and Simonovits [7] on the Turán numbers of even cycles to linear hypergraphs.

Using our results on linear Turán numbers, we also obtain bounds on the cycle-complete hypergraph Ramsey numbers. We show that there are positive constants a = am,r and b = bm,r, depending only on m and r, such that

We construct minor-closed addable families of graphs that are subcritical and contain all planar graphs. This contradicts (one direction of) a well-known conjecture of Noy.

This paper is part of the ongoing effort to study high-dimensional permutations. We prove the analogue to the Erdős–Szekeres theorem: For every k ≥ 1, every order-nk-dimensional permutation contains a monotone subsequence of length Ωk($\sqrt{n}$), and this is tight. On the other hand, and unlike the classical case, the longest monotone subsequence in a random k-dimensional permutation of order n is asymptotically almost surely Θk(nk/(k+1)).

Assume that the edges of the complete graph Kn are given independent uniform [0, 1] weights. We consider the expected minimum total weight μk of k ⩽ 2 edge-disjoint spanning trees. When k is large we show that μk ≈ k2. Most of the paper is concerned with the case k = 2. We show that m2 tends to an explicitly defined constant and that μ2 ≈ 4.1704288. . . .

Let Φ be a random k-SAT formula in which every variable occurs precisely d times positively and d times negatively. Assuming that k is sufficiently large and that d is slightly below the critical degree where the formula becomes unsatisfiable with high probability, we determine the limiting distribution of the number of satisfying assignments.

Let k ⩾ 3 be an integer, hk(G) be the number of vertices of degree at least 2k in a graph G, and ℓk(G) be the number of vertices of degree at most 2k − 2 in G. Dirac and Erdős proved in 1963 that if hk(G) − ℓk(G) ⩾ k2 + 2k − 4, then G contains k vertex-disjoint cycles. For each k ⩾ 2, they also showed an infinite sequence of graphs Gk(n) with hk(Gk(n)) − ℓk(Gk(n)) = 2k − 1 such that Gk(n) does not have k disjoint cycles. Recently, the authors proved that, for k ⩾ 2, a bound of 3k is sufficient to guarantee the existence of k disjoint cycles, and presented for every k a graph G0(k) with hk(G0(k)) − ℓk(G0(k)) = 3k − 1 and no k disjoint cycles. The goal of this paper is to refine and sharpen this result. We show that the Dirac–Erdős construction is optimal in the sense that for every k ⩾ 2, there are only finitely many graphs G with hk(G) − ℓk(G) ⩾ 2k but no k disjoint cycles. In particular, every graph G with |V(G)| ⩾ 19k and hk(G) − ℓk(G) ⩾ 2k contains k disjoint cycles.

A sunflower is a collection of distinct sets such that the intersection of any two of them is the same as the common intersection C of all of them, and |C| is smaller than each of the sets. A longstanding conjecture due to Erdős and Szemerédi (solved recently in [7, 9]; see also [22]) was that the maximum size of a family of subsets of [n] that contains no sunflower of fixed size k > 2 is exponentially smaller than 2n as n → ∞. We consider the problems of determining the maximum sum and product of k families of subsets of [n] that contain no sunflower of size k with one set from each family. For the sum, we prove that the maximum is

It follows from known results that every regular tripartite hypergraph of positive degree, with n vertices in each class, has matching number at least n/2. This bound is best possible, and the extremal configuration is unique. Here we prove a stability version of this statement, establishing that every regular tripartite hypergraph with matching number at most (1 + ϵ)n/2 is close in structure to the extremal configuration, where ‘closeness’ is measured by an explicit function of ϵ.

We consider distance colourings in graphs of maximum degree at most d and how excluding one fixed cycle of length ℓ affects the number of colours required as d → ∞. For vertex-colouring and t ⩾ 1, if any two distinct vertices connected by a path of at most t edges are required to be coloured differently, then a reduction by a logarithmic (in d) factor against the trivial bound O(dt) can be obtained by excluding an odd cycle length ℓ ⩾ 3t if t is odd or by excluding an even cycle length ℓ ⩾ 2t + 2. For edge-colouring and t ⩾ 2, if any two distinct edges connected by a path of fewer than t edges are required to be coloured differently, then excluding an even cycle length ℓ ⩾ 2t is sufficient for a logarithmic factor reduction. For t ⩾ 2, neither of the above statements are possible for other parity combinations of ℓ and t. These results can be considered extensions of results due to Johansson (1996) and Mahdian (2000), and are related to open problems of Alon and Mohar (2002) and Kaiser and Kang (2014).

An oriented k-uniform hypergraph (a family of ordered k-sets) has the ordering property (or Property O) if, for every linear order of the vertex set, there is some edge oriented consistently with the linear order. We find bounds on the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph with Property O.

We identify a relationship between a certain family of random walks on Euclidean lattices and difference matrices over cyclic groups. We then use the techniques of Fourier analysis to estimate the return probabilities of these random walks, which in turn yields the asymptotic number of difference matrices over cyclic groups as the number of columns increases.

We prove that the roots of the chromatic polynomials of planar graphs are dense in the interval between 32/27 and 4, except possibly in a small interval around τ + 2 where τ is the golden ratio. This interval arises due to a classical result of Tutte, which states that the chromatic polynomial of every planar graph takes a positive value at τ + 2. Our results lead us to conjecture that τ + 2 is the only such number less than 4.

This paper deals with a combinatorial problem concerning colourings of uniform hypergraphs with large girth. We prove that if H is an n-uniform non-r-colourable simple hypergraph then its maximum edge degree Δ(H) satisfies the inequality

As an application of our probabilistic technique we establish a lower bound for the classical van der Waerden number W(n, r), the minimum natural N such that in an arbitrary colouring of the set of integers {1,. . .,N} with r colours there exists a monochromatic arithmetic progression of length n. We prove that

The Tutte polynomial of a graph is a two-variable polynomial whose zeros and evaluations encode many interesting properties of the graph. In this article we investigate the real zeros of the Tutte polynomials of graphs, and show that they form a dense subset of certain regions of the plane. This is the first density result for the real zeros of the Tutte polynomial in a region of positive volume. Our result almost confirms a conjecture of Jackson and Sokal except for one region which is related to an open problem on flow polynomials.

Given two functions f,g : {0,1}n → {0,1}, a mapping ψ : {0,1}n → {0,1}n is said to be a mapping from f to g if it is a bijection and f(z) = g(ψ(z)) for every z ∈ {0,1}n. In this paper we study Lipschitz mappings between Boolean functions.

Our first result gives a construction of a C-Lipschitz mapping from the Majority function to the Dictator function for some universal constant C. On the other hand, there is no n/2-Lipschitz mapping in the other direction, namely from the Dictator function to the Majority function. This answers an open problem posed by Daniel Varga in the paper of Benjamini, Cohen and Shinkar (FOCS 2014 [1]).

We also show a mapping from Dictator to XOR that is 3-local, 2-Lipschitz, and its inverse is O(log(n))-Lipschitz, where by L-local mapping we mean that each output bit of the mapping depends on at most L input bits.

Next, we consider the problem of finding functions such that any mapping between them must have large average stretch, where the average stretch of a mapping φ is defined as

Finally, we show that for a random balanced function f: {0,1}n → {0,1}n, with high probability there is a mapping φ from Dictator to f such that both φ and φ−1 have constant average stretch. In particular, this implies that one cannot obtain lower bounds on average stretch by taking uniformly random functions.

The classical Kővári–Sós–Turán theorem states that if G is an n-vertex graph with no copy of Ks,t as a subgraph, then the number of edges in G is at most O(n2−1/s). We prove that if one forbids Ks,t as an induced subgraph, and also forbids any fixed graph H as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph, the same asymptotic upper bound still holds, with different constant factors. This introduces a non-trivial angle from which to generalize Turán theory to induced forbidden subgraphs, which this paper explores. Along the way, we derive a non-trivial upper bound on the number of cliques of fixed order in a Kr-free graph with no induced copy of Ks,t. This result is an induced analogue of a recent theorem of Alon and Shikhelman and is of independent interest.

Let hom(G) denote the size of the largest clique or independent set of a graph G. In 2007, Bukh and Sudakov proved that every n-vertex graph G with hom(G) = O(logn) contains an induced subgraph with Ω(n1/2) distinct degrees, and raised the question of deciding whether an analogous result holds for every n-vertex graph G with hom(G) = O(nϵ), where ϵ > 0 is a fixed constant. Here, we answer their question in the affirmative and show that every graph G on n vertices contains an induced subgraph with Ω((n/hom(G))1/2) distinct degrees. We also prove a stronger result for graphs with large cliques or independent sets and show, for any fixed k ∈ ℕ, that if an n-vertex graph G contains no induced subgraph with k distinct degrees, then hom(G)⩾n/(k − 1) − o(n); this bound is essentially best possible.

NP-complete problems should be hard on some instances but those may be extremely rare. On generic instances many such problems, especially related to random graphs, have been proved to be easy. We show the intractability of random instances of a graph colouring problem: this graph problem is hard on average unless all NP problems under all samplable (i.e. generatable in polynomial time) distributions are easy. Worst case reductions use special gadgets and typically map instances into a negligible fraction of possible outputs. Ours must output nearly random graphs and avoid any super-polynomial distortion of probabilities. This poses significant technical difficulties.
