1 A weight of five pounds exceeds that of any book discussed by Arnold Bennett in his comments on the relation between the weight, volume, price, and content of books. One may repeat his question: “Are physical strain, aching wrists, general anguish and feats of balancing supposed to be an aid to intellectual comprehension?” On the other hand, the importance of a heavy and unwieldy format and a high price have probably been properly assessed by the publisher and the author. The publishers claim “that the public refuses to take new works or grave works seriously unless they are also heavy and unwieldy. And, second, that the public refuses to pay a remunerative price for books which are not heavy and unwieldy. In other words, the public assesses a work of literature by its physical weight and bulk. I believe these answers to be correct” ( Bennett, Arnold, The Savour of Life, London, 1928, p. 189 Google Scholar). The reviewer pleads that the length of this review is not a result of his anxiety to be “a mere member” of the Canadian public. It can be said here that the review is used to elaborate arguments which have in the main appeared elsewhere.
