Mesostenus Nubilipennis.–♀. Black ; anterior orbits, lower part of cheeks, spot on middle of face, most of clypeus and labrum, spot on mandibles, annulus on antennæ, line on sides of collar, spot on each side of prothorax above, spot on disk of mesothorax, most of scutellum, dot on post-scutellum, tegulæ, spot beneath, spot on sides of pleura, spot on each side behind posterior wing, two elongate marks on metathorax behind covering the prominent, obtuse and transversely compressed tubercles, the four anterior coxæ, spot on posterior pair above, annulus at base of posterior tibiæ, extreme base and apex of the first joint of posterior tarsi, the second, third and fourth joints entirely, and the apical margin of segments 1-6 of abdomen, all white ; front unarmed ; thorax opaque; mesothorax confluently punctured ; metathorax reticulated; wings hyaline, with a fuliginous cloud beneath stigma, areolet quadrate, closed; legs fulvous, extreme tips of posterior femora, their tibiæ except white annulus near base, most of basal joint of their tarsi, and the apical joint, black ; abdomen fusiform, rather shining, punctured, first segment considerably dilated at apex ; ovipositor shorter than abdomen.

Mr. George Norman has sent me specimens of a species of Agrotis allied to tessellata, which were taken at orillia, I propose to call the species Agrotis vennipellis. The male antennae are brush-like, eyes naked, all the tibiae spinose. The thorax and tegulae are dark brown; collar with a blackish shade in front, below which it is ashen.

Lygus Chagnoni, n. sp.— This species of the genus Lygus is of a form near to L. pabulinus, Linn., in appearance.

It is ovate, convex bright green in living specimens, with irregular purplish-brown markings at the base of the membrane, smooth and without bristles, and a silky pubesecence on the sides of the pronotum, which has an orange-yellow border next the head, shading backwards in narrow lines into the green coloration, so as to make the reen appear in broad bands.

Walker (1866) described Chauliodes disjunctus on the basis of a single female from Vancouver Island. Davis (1903) identified males and females from California as belonging to this species and noted that the male antennae were pilose and as long as the head and thorax combined. Supposing Davis' observation to have been based on a broken specimen, van der Weele (1910) referred C. disjunctus to Neohermes Banks, 1908, as a close ally and probable synonym of Neohermes californicus (Walker), a species in the male of which the antennae are as long as the body and are provided with segmental whorls of long hair.

Apterous Viviparous Female. Colour when alive: antenna pale on basal half; head and thorax brownish; mesothorax to abdominal segment VIII shining black; legs pale. Colour when macerated: antennal segments I and II pale brown, segments III, IV colourless with pale brown apical annuli, segments V, VI brown; head and prothorax pale brown, nearly colourless; mesothorax to abdominal segment VIII dark brown; cornicles dark brown; femora and tibiae pale brown, nearly colourless; tarsi pale brown, slightly darker than tibiae; cauda faintly fuscous.

An assay procedure for estimating the dosage–response relationship of early instar larvae of the onion maggot, Hylemya antiqua (Meigen), to insecticides is reported. The method gave reproducible results for diazinon on several test dates. The assay showed that maggots from strains collected at East St. Paul and Portage La Prairie, Man., tolerated 50 to 108 times as much heptachlor as a susceptible strain from Chatham, Ont. Previously, adults from the Manitoba strains had been shown to be highly tolerant to heptachlor. The potencies of Bayer 37289 and Bayer 25141 relative to diazinon were 0.5 and 0.1, respectively, for a heptachlor-tolerant strain. For NIA 10242 and Nemacide, equivalent values were 0.9 and 0.2 for this strain and 1.0 and 0.2 for the susceptible Chatham strain. The slight differences in the tolerance to these insecticides, shown for the two strains of larvae, were not associated with their tolerance to heptachlor.

Male. Intermediate in maculation between glaciana Moesch. and bipartitana Clem. Basal area dark black-brown, outwardly angulate in central portion of wing; antemedian whitish band broad on the costa, more or less perpendicular, with a few dark strigae; median dark band much as in bipartitana; whitish terminal area also much as in this species with three dark costal streaks and a small dark apical spot; slight dark reticulations below apex and a narrow dark patch at middle of outer margin (only evident on right side). Secondaries smoky. Expanse 18 mm.

Since the preceeding accounts of the genera Evippe, Eidothea and Helice were sent to the publishers, I have taken a single speciment of the species described below. Its small size, general appearance and the tufts of raised scales at first inclined me to place it near Laruna; but a, closer examination shows it to belong to the Gelechidæ, and to the same group (or subsection of Gelechia) witin Evippe, &c. and Gelechia difficilisella.

Form parallel-oblong to elongate-subovate, about three times as long as wide. Color black; second antennal segments and protrochanters more or less rufo-testaceous; tarsi and distal two-thirds of tibiae rufous. Luster slightly aeneous and somewhat shining.

Good organization of a scientific paper benefits both the writer and the reader. It enables the author to develop his subject systematically and logically, and to attain his objective with greater clarity, brevity, and emphasis. It provides the reader with a plan that he can follow and so keeps him attuned throughout to the writer's thought sequence. This contributes to comfortable reading and to better communication of information—worthy objectives in any type of writing. Lack of organization leads to confusion for both writer and reader.

The known ants of the state of Idaho comprise about 73 named species, subspecies and varieties. They occupy a wide variety of habitats ranging from dunes of pure sand, barren and wind-blown, to forests of yellow pine, fir and spruce, with an abundance of shade and moistuce. Because of the large amount of vegetation in the montane forests and subalpine pine meadows a large percentage of the ant fauna lives there, if not exclusively at least in very great numbers. It is, however, rather surprising to observe the large number of species which nest on the dry plains of sagebrush, bromegras and rabbitbrush, and on the scattered alkaline flats of greasewood in the southern part of the state.

In the same salt meadows north of Bathurst, N. B., where Mr. Brown and I captured the recently described race of Coenonympha inornata (1939, Can. Ent., LXXI, 266) we took a series of specimens of L. dorcas Kby. which on examination, after spreading, appears to constitute an undescribed and rather strikingly different race. The butterflies were by no means common; the first specimens were taken on August 6, evidently freshly emerged, and by dint of careful searching during the next four or five days we were able to capture a series of about 50 specimens.

Penenirmus zeylanicus from Megalaima zeylanica and P. rafflesi from Megalaima rafflesii are both described as new. Penenirmus from African barbets are listed and the new species compared with those known from the Picidae.

Rudolfina digitata sp.nov. (Diptera, Sphaeroceridae, Limosininae) is described from the Yukon and Alaska and from alpine tundra in Alberta, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and New Hampshire. This distribution is discussed with respect to the hypothesis that these areas are postglacial refugia for arctic and subarctic species.

EGG—Conoidal, truncated, broad at base, the sides moderately rounded ; depressed at summit; marked by about eighteen prominent, vertical, slightly wavy ribs, half of which extend from base to summit and form around the latter a serrated rim ; the remainder end irregularly at two thirds to three quarters distance from base ; between each pair of ribs are equidistant transverse striæ. Broader at base than Alcestis or Idalia. Duration of this stage 12 to 17 days.
