TWO RELATED SPECIES OF PARAGUS (DIPTERA: SYRPHIDAE), ONE FROM THE NEARCTIC AND ONE FROM THE PALAEARCTIC

Abstract

This paper describes two related species of the subgenus Paragus (Paragus) Latreille 1804 from two remote regions. The study of material from the Bohart Museum (Davis, California, United States) resulted in the discovery of an undescribed Nearctic species, P. vockerothi sp.nov. Simultaneously, one similar new European species, P. glumaci sp.nov., is reported among material collected from the Balkan Peninsula. The description of both species, with figures of male genitalia and diagnostic characters, is given. The zoogeographical significance of the discovery of these species is emphasized.

Résumé

Ce travail décrit deux espèces parentes du sous-genre Paragus (Paragus) Latreille 1804 de deux régions éloignées. Dans la collection du Bohart Museum (Davis, Californie, États-Unis), une espèce nouvelle du Nouveau Monde, P. vockerothi sp.nov., a été retrouvée. Simultanément, une espèce semblable, P. glumaci sp.nov., est trouvée dans le matériel collectionné sur la Péninsule balkanique (Europe). Les descriptions des deux espèces sont fournies avec des figures des génitalia mâles et des diagnoses. La signification zoogéographique de la découverte de ces espèces est accentuée.
