SURVIVAL OF LARCH CASEBEARERS, COLEOPHORA LARICELLA (HUBNER), ON FOLIAGE OF EIGHT SEEDLING CONIFERS

Abstract

A no-choice feeding study was used to evaluate larch casebearer development and survival on eight species of conifer seedlings and two foliar stages of larch from molting to the fourth-instar larvae through adult eclosion. Percentage survival through adult eclosion varied on foliage of western larch (spring—flush stage, 44%; fall—bud set stage, 23%), Douglas-fir (40%), grand fir (26%), Englemann spruce (26%), western white pine (10%), and lodgepole pine (6%). No survival occurred on ponderosa pine or western hemlock. The rate of development differed among conifer seedling species, and between foliar stages of larch.

Résumé

On a effectué une étude visant à quantifier le développement et la survie du porte-case du mélèze au cours de la période délimitée par la mue marquant le début du quatrième stade larvaire et l’éclosion de l’adulte, lorsqu’alimenté sans possibilité de choix sur des pousses de huit espèces de conifères, et sur deux stades de maturité du feuillage du mélèze. Les pourcentages de survie à l’éclosion observés étaient : sur le feuillage du mélèze occidental (débourrement printannier, 44%; mise en place des bourgeons d’automne, 23%), le sapin Douglas (40%), le sapin grandissime (26%), l’épinette d’Englemann (26%), le pin argenté (10%) et le pin lodgepole (6%). On a n’observé aucune survie sur le pin ponderosa et la pruche occidentale. La vitesse du développement a varié entre espèces de confères et entre les deux stades de feuillage du mélèze.
