REVIEW OF THE MYRMECOPHILOUS PTOMAPHAGUS, SUBGENUS ECHINOCOLEUS (NEW STATUS), OF NORTH AMERICA (COLEOPTERA: LEIODIDAE: CHOLEVINAE: PTOMAPHAGINI)

Abstract

We here give Echinocoleus new ranking as a subgenus of Ptomaphagus. Ptomaphagus (Echinocoleus) acutus sp.nov. is described from the southeastern United States (Alabama, Georgia, Florida). It is the most plesiotypic member of a group in which all other species live in the western United States and (probably) adjacent Mexico. All are myrmecophilous with Pogonomyrmex and Aphaenogaster (= Novomessor) harvester ants. A phylogenetic analysis is given for the subgenus. The main synapomorphies of Echinocoleus, which are mostly interrelated with myrmecophily, are reduction of body length and broadening of elytra, reduction of antennal length, verticalization of mesocoxal insertion, reduction of mesosternal carina, body with a golden pubescense, and a pointed projection at the end of the spermatheca.

Résumé

Nous donnons ici à Echinocoleus le statut de sous-genre du genre Ptomaphagus. Une nouvelle espèce, Ptomaphagus (Echinocoleus) acutus, découverte dans le sud-est des États-Unis (Alabama, Georgie, Floride) est décrite. Il s’agit là du membre le plus plésiotypique du groupe dont toutes les autres espèces vivent dans l’ouest des États-Unis et (probablement) dans la partie adjacente du Mexique. Toutes sont myrmécophiles et vivent chez des fourmis moissonneuses Pogonomyrmex et chez Aphaenogaster (= Novomessor). Une analyse phylogénétique du sous-genre est proposée. Les principales synapomorphies rencontrées chez Echinocoleus sont reliées à la myrmécophilie : la réduction de la longueur du corps et l’élargissement des élytres, la réduction de la longueur des antennes, la verticalisation de l’insertion mésocoxale, la réduction de la carène mésosternale, la pubescence dorée sur le corps, la présence d’une projection en pointe à l’extrémité de la spermathèque.
