EFFECTS OF VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ONION MAGGOTS (DIPTERA: ANTHOMYIIDAE) ON AXENIC ONION AGAR

Abstract

Under axenic conditions, larvae of Delia antiqua develop to the adult stage on onion agar only if the agar is supplemented with mixtures of 10 essential amino acids and 8 water-soluble vitamins. The omission of the amino-acid mixture allowed no development past the first instar. When the vitamin mixture was omitted, 1 of 25 larvae developed to the pupal stage. Omission of individual vitamin supplements caused less marked effects. Omitting supplemental choline, thiamine, pyridoxine, or pantothenic acid had no significant effect on development. Omitting supplemental biotin or nicotinic acid resulted in suboptimal development to the adult stage. Omitting riboflavin or folic acid resulted in development to the adult stage, but the adults did not lay viable eggs. Presumably nutrients that are in insufficient supply in onion tissue are supplied by bacteria in nature.

Résumé

Sous des conditions axéniques, les larves de Delia antiqua se développent jusqu'à l'adulte sur de l'agar d'oignon seulement s'il contient des suppléments des 10 acides aminés essentiels et de 8 vitamines hydrosolubles. L'omission du mélange d'acides aminés ne permet pas le développement au-delà du premier stade. L'omission du mélange de vitamines a permis le développement jusqu'au stade pupal d'une seule larve sur 25. L'omission individuelle des suppléments de vitamines a causé des effets moins drastiques. L'omission du supplément de choline, de thiamine, de pyridoxine ou d'acide pantothénique n'a pas eu d'effet significatif sur le développement. L'omission du supplément de biotine ou d'acide nicotinique a réduit le succès du développement de l'adulte à un niveau suboptimal. L'omission de la riboflavine ou de l'acide folique n'a pas empêché le développement des adultes, mais ces derniers n'ont pas pondu d'oeufs viables. On croit que les nutriments qui ne sont pas présents en quantités suffisantes dans l'oignon sont normalement fournis pas des bactéries.
