DESCRIPTION OF TWO NEW SPECIES OF STYGAMERACARUS GEN.NOV. FROM NORTH AMERICA, AND PROPOSAL OF STYGAMERACARINAE SUBFAM.NOV. (ACARI: ARRENUROIDEA: ATHIENEMANNIIDAE)

Abstract

Deutonymphs, and male and female adults, of Stygameracarus cooki sp.nov., and a male adult of S. canadensis sp.nov., are described from interstitial habitats associated with small streams in temperate North America. The genus Stygameracarus and the monobasic subfamily Stygameracarinae are proposed and diagnosed, based primarily on the shape of the capitulum and the highly modified structure of the pedipalps in both deutonymphs and adults, and the distinctive structure of the genital field region in adults. Possible relationships between members of the new genus and other Athienemanniidae are discussed, and a new key to the subfamilies of Athienemanniidae is presented.

Résumé

L’auteur décrit des deutonymphes et des adultes mâles et femelles de Stygameracarus cooki, nouvelle espèce, et un adulte mâle de S. canadensis, nouvelle espèce, à partir d’habitats interstitiels associés à de petits cours d’eau des régions tempérées d’Amérique du Nord. Il propose et diagnose le genre Stygameracarus et la sous-famille monobasique des Stygameracarinés, surtout d’après la forme du capitulum et de la structure considérablement modifiée des pédipalpes des deutonymphes et des adultes, et de la structure caractéristique des parties génitales des adultes. Il examine les rapports possibles entre certains membres du nouveau genre et d’autres Athienemanniidés et présente une nouvelle clef d’identification des sous-familles d’Athienemanniidés.
