DESCRIPTION OF THREE NEW ANAPHES SPECIES (HYMENOPTERA: MYMARIDAE), EGG PARASITOIDS OF THE CARROT WEEVIL, LISTRONOTUS OREGONENSIS (LECONTE) (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE), AND REDESCRIPTION OF ANAPHES SORDIDATUS GIRAULT

Abstract

Three new mymarid egg parasitoids of the carrot weevil, Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), are described: Anaphes cotei Huber from Nova Scotia; Anaphes listronoti Huber from Quebec; and Anaphes victus Huber from Quebec, Michigan, and Texas. A key to the species is given. Anaphes sorditatus (Girault), with which at least one of the new species was previously confused, is redescribed. Although listronoti and sorditatus cannot presently be distinguished morphologically, they are biologically distinct and have different hosts. Crosses between male sordidatus and female victus yielded female offspring in 27% of the tests but none in the reciprocal crosses. The corresponding control crosses resulted in 90 and 30% female offspring. Mating did not occur in attempts to cross sordidatus with listronoti. On three occasions an unidentified species of Anagrus was reared from field-collected carrot weevil eggs. This represents the first report of an Anagrus species from Curculionidae.

Résumé

Nous décrivons trois nouvelles espèces de mymarides, parasitoids des oeufs de la charançon de la carotte, Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) : Anaphes cotei Huber de la Nouvelle Ecosse; Anaphes listronoti Huber du Québec; et Anaphes victus Huber du Québec, Michigan, et Texas. Nous présentons une clé pour distinguer les espèces. Nous redécrivons Anaphes sorditatus (Girault), avec laquelle au moins une des nouvelles espèces a été confondue antérieurement. Quoique listronoti et sorditatus ne peuvent présentment pas être distingués morphologiquement elles sont distinctes au point de vue biologique et elles ont des hôtes différents. Des croisements entre les maies de sordidatus et des femelles de victus ont donné des progénitures females en 27% des tests mais aucune dans les croisements réciproques. Les croisements correspondentes réciproques ont donné 90 et 30% de progénitures femelles. L’accouplement n’a pas eu lieu dans des essais de croissement entre sordidatus et listronoti. Nous démontrons l’importance d’avoir des informations biologiques pour élucider les vraies identités des espèces. Nous avons élevée a trois reprises une espèce non-identifïée d’Anagrus des oeufs de la charançon de la carrote prélevés sur le terrain. Ceci représente la première mention d’une espèce d’Anagrus de la famille Curculionidae.
