THE BIOLOGY OF THE LESSER CLOVER LEAF WEEVIL, HYPERA NIGRIROSTRIS (FABR.) (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE), ON RED CLOVER, TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE L., IN SASKATCHEWAN

Abstract

Populations of the lesser clover leaf weevil, Hypera nigrirostris (Fabr.), on red clover, Trifolium pratense L., in northeastern Saskatchewan were sampled weekly from May to August 1986 and 1987. Adults overwintered in red clover fields, and began to feed, mate, and oviposit in late April and early May. Eggs were laid subepidermally in stipules, shoots, and leaves from early May to mid-July. Larvae were located on red clover stipules, buds, and fiowerheads and developed through four instars Larvae were collected from early June until mid-August. Spatial distributions of eggs and larvae were aggregated, though the degree of aggregation decreased with succeeding developmental stages. Pupae were collected on shoots and in debris from late June until August. New-season adults first occurred in mid-July; large increases in adult densities corresponded to the appearance of these adults.

Résumé

L’échantillonnage des populations du charançon à rostre noir, Hypera nigrirostris (Fabr.), dans des champs de trèfle rouge, Trifolium pratense L., au nord-est de la Saskatchewan, s’est effectué sur un base hebdomadaire de mai à août en 1986 et 1987 Les adultes passent l’hiver dans les champs de trèfle rouge, et commencent à s’alimenter, à se reproduire et à déposer leurs oeufs de la fin de avril ou au début mai. Les oeufs sont déposés sous l’épiderme des stipules, des pousses et des feuilles du début mai a la mi-juillet. Les larves se retrouvent sur les stipules, les bourgeons, et les inflorescences, où elles se développent jusqu’au quatrième stade larvaire. Les larves ont été échantillonnées du début juin à la mi-août. La distribution spatiale des oeufs et des larves est d’une forme grégaire, quoique les aggrégations étaient moins apparentes avec la progression du développement larvaire. Les chrysalides ont été échantillonnées de la fin juin jusqu’au mois d’août sur les tiges du trèfle rouge et dans les débris végétaux. Les nouveaux adultes apparaissent à la mi-juillet, ce qui induit une augmentation marquée de la densité générale des adultes.
