NEW SPECIES AND RECORDS OF NORTH AMERICAN TACHINUS GRAVENHORST (COLEOPTERA: STAPHYLINIDAE)

Abstract

Two new species, Tachinus beckeri from northwestern British Columbia and southern Yukon Territory and T. californicus from southern California, are described and their major diagnostic characters illustrated with line drawings and scanning electron photomicrographs. Tachinus jacuticus campbelli is placed in synonymy with T. jacuticus jacuticus and a new subspecies, T. jacuticus ullrichi, from Quebec and Labrador is named. Tachinus thruppi Hatch is removed from synonymy with T. frigidus and considered a valid species. Both T. thruppi and T. frigidus are redescribed and illustrated. A new, revised key to the species of Tachinus is included.New distributional data are presented for 40 species and new or revised distributional maps are presented for 24 species. Changes in classification of Tachinus proposed by Ullrich in his revision of the world species are reviewed and those that are accepted are incorporated into a revised classification of the North American species. These changes are included in a check list of the North and Central American species of the genus.

Résumé

Deux nouvelles espèces, soit Tachinus beckeri du nord-ouest de la Colombie-Britannique et du sud du Yukon ainsi que T. californicus du sud de la Californie sont décrites et leurs principaux caractères illustrés au moyen de dessins et de photographies prises au microscope électronique à balayage. Tachinus jacuticus campbelli est placé en synonymie avec T. jacuticus jacuticus et une nouvelle sous-espèce, T. jacuticus ullrichi du Québec et du Labrador est décrite. Tachinus thruppi Hatch, placé auparavant en synonymie avec T. frigidus, est considéré comme une espèce valide. Les deux espèces, T. thruppi et T. frigidus sont redécrites et illustrées. Une nouvelle clé de détermination à l’espèce est aussi incluse.Le présent article comprend en outre de nouvelles données sur la répartition géographique de 40 espèces ainsi que des cartes de répartition en ce qui a trait à 24 espèces. Les changements touchant la classification du genre Tachinus que proposait Ullrich (1975) dans sa révision mondiale des espèces sont également traités et ceux jugés valides sont intégrés dans une nouvelle classification des espèces d’Amérique du Nord. Ces changements sont également intégrés dans une liste de contrôle des espèces d’Amérique du Nord et d’Amérique centrale.
