EFFECT OF INSECTICIDES ON PREDATORS OF THE PEAR PSYLLA, PSYLLA PYRICOLA (HEMIPTERA: PSYLLIDAE), IN ONTARIO

Abstract

The predominant predator of the pear psylla, Psylla pyricola Foerster, in a pear orchard on the Niagara Peninsula, Ontario was the anthocorid, Anthocoris nemoralis (F.). Applications of permethrin (62.5 g a.i./ha) reduced numbers of the predator when applied at petal fall. Azinphosmethyl (336.4 g a.i./ha) applied at petal and at 1st cover did not affect A. nemoralis. Both insecticides reduced the numbers of the predatory mite, Balaustium putmani Smiley. Species of Hemiptera other than A. nemoralis, especially Miridae and Reduviidae, were reduced by permethrin applied at petal fall and by azinphosmethyl applied at 1st cover.

Résumé

La punaise Anthocoris némoralis (F.) constituait le principal prédateur de la psylle du poirier, Psylla pyricola Foerster, dans un verger de poires de la péninsule du Niagara (Ontario). Des applications de perméthrine (62.5 g de principe actif par hectare), à la chute des pétales, ont provoqué une réduction du nombre des prédateurs. Par contre, l'azinphosméthyl (336.4 g de principe actif par hectare), appliqué à la chute des pétales et à la première couverture, n'a eu aucun effet sur A. némoralis. Les deux insecticides ont par ailleurs donné une baisse des populations de l'acarien prédateur Balustium putmani Smiley. L'application de perméthrine à la chute des pétales et l'utilisation d'azinphosméthyl à la première couverture ont donné une réduction des populations d'espèces d'hémiptères autres que A. némoralis, en particulier les miridés et les réduviidés.
