Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies is sad to note the death of Fr Munitiz, who served for a five-year term as a member of the Editorial Board from 2005 to 2010. The Society of Jesus has made many significant contributions to Byzantine studies: Archimandrite Robert Taft SJ and (for a period resident in Birmingham and involved with the, as it was then, Centre for Byzantine Studies) Fr Joseph Gill SJ come readily to mind. Joe Munitiz was a worthy member of that company, and his sage but unassertive contributions as a board member were of a piece with his loyal and learned presence over the years at seminar series in Oxford, London, and Birmingham. Near the end of his long and productive life, Joe set out in an interview with Emmanuele Colombo for the Journal of Jesuit Studies (online publication date 26 February 2021) his own relation to Byzantine studies and more. It bears the characteristic title ‘Great respect for texts’ and expresses more eloquently than the Editors would be able to what lay behind this significant life of scholarship.
