ARLIS/Norden: 10 years of co-operation

Abstract

ARLIS/Norden was founded in 1986 to bring together art libraries and art librarians of all kinds in the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The association has maintained close links with the IFLA Section of Art Libraries, and it hosted the Section’s meetings at Stockholm in 1989. ARLIS/Norden has received guests from other countries, while Nordic colleagues have participated in events in other countries. Its own annual meetings are the key events in ARLIS/Norden’s own programme.

1. An English version of Jacqueline Viaux’s inspirational paper was published in ARLIS/Norden’s excellent newsletter, ARLIS/Norden Info 1992 no. 2/3. The original French text, and a new English translation, appeared in Art Libraries Journal 1993 vol. 18 no. 3 p.4-7.

2 In Britain, and no doubt elsewhere, the word ‘Quality’ has been brutally redefined in recent years to mean, not excellence, but the best that can be achieved within given limits and / or conformance to a given specification.

3 Eeva Viljanen wrote this article during her last weeks as Librarian at the Museum of Applied Arts. The librarian’s post was abolished, as a result of the ‘frightening economic situation’ which she refers to, as from the end of February, and the library (and archives) became part of the responsibility of curatorial staff.
