A synthesis is presented of two recent studies on modelling the nonlinear neuro-mechanical hearing processes in mosquitoes and in mammals. In each case, a hierarchy of models is considered in attempts to understand data that shows nonlinear amplification and compression of incoming sound signals. The insect’s hearing is tuned to the vicinity of a single input frequency. Nonlinear response occurs via an arrangement of many dual capacity neuro-mechanical units called scolopidia within the Johnston’s organ. It is shown how the observed data can be captured by a simple nonlinear oscillator model that is derived from homogenization of a more complex model involving a radial array of scolopidia. The physiology of the mammalian cochlea is much more complex, with hearing occurring via a travelling wave along a tapered, compartmentalized tube. Waves travel a frequency-dependent distance along the tube, at which point they are amplified and “heard”. Local models are reviewed for the pickup mechanism, within the outer hair cells of the organ of Corti. The current debate in the literature is elucidated, on the relative importance of two possible nonlinear mechanisms: active hair bundles and somatic motility. It is argued that the best experimental agreement can be found when the nonlinear terms include longitudinal coupling, the physiological basis of which is described. A discussion section summarizes the lessons learnt from both studies and attempts to shed light on the more general question of what constitutes a good mathematical model of a complex physiological process.

The process of sleep stage identification is a labour-intensive task that involves the specialized interpretation of the polysomnographic signals captured from a patient’s overnight sleep session. Automating this task has proven to be challenging for data mining algorithms because of noise, complexity and the extreme size of data. In this paper we apply nonsmooth optimization to extract key features that lead to better accuracy. We develop a specific procedure for identifying K-complexes, a special type of brain wave crucial for distinguishing sleep stages. The procedure contains two steps. We first extract “easily classified” K-complexes, and then apply nonsmooth optimization methods to extract features from the remaining data and refine the results from the first step. Numerical experiments show that this procedure is efficient for detecting K-complexes. It is also found that most classification methods perform significantly better on the extracted features.

We prove estimates for the partial derivatives of the solution to a time-fractional diffusion equation posed over a bounded spatial domain. Such estimates are needed for the analysis of effective numerical methods, particularly since the solution is typically less regular than in the familiar case of classical diffusion.

It is well known that transcritical flow past an obstacle may generate undular bores propagating away from the obstacle. This flow has been successfully modelled in the framework of the forced Korteweg–de Vries equation, where numerical simulations and asymptotic analyses have shown that the unsteady undular bores are connected by a locally steady solution over the obstacle. In this paper we present an overview of the underlying theory, together with some recent work on the case where the obstacle has a large width.

We present a stability analysis of steady-state solutions of a continuous-time predator–prey population dynamics model subject to Allee effects on the prey population which occur at low population density. Numerical simulations show that the system subject to an Allee effect takes a much longer time to reach its stable steady-state solution. This result differs from that obtained for the discrete-time version of the same model.

We consider an insurance company whose surplus is governed by a jump diffusion risk process. The insurance company can purchase proportional reinsurance for claims and invest its surplus in a risk-free asset and a risky asset whose return follows a jump diffusion process. Our main goal is to find an optimal investment and proportional reinsurance policy which maximizes the expected exponential utility of the terminal wealth. By solving the corresponding Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation, closed-form solutions for the value function as well as the optimal investment and proportional reinsurance policy are obtained. We also discuss the effects of parameters on the optimal investment and proportional reinsurance policy by numerical calculations.

There are many ways to define how long diffusive processes take, and an appropriate “critical time” is highly dependent on the specific application. In particular, we are interested in diffusive processes through multilayered materials, which have applications to a wide range of areas. Here we perform a comprehensive comparison of six critical time definitions, outlining their strengths, weaknesses, and potential applications. A further four definitions are also briefly considered. Equivalences between appropriate definitions are determined in the asymptotic limit as the number of layers becomes large. Relatively simple approximations are obtained for the critical time definitions. The approximations are more accessible than inverting the analytical solution for time, and surprisingly accurate. The key definitions, their behaviour and approximations are summarized in tables.

High tuberculosis (TB) prevalence in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a serious public health concern. The epidemic in this region is exacerbated by the presence of drug-resistant TB strains as well as HIV infection. This presents a public health threat not only locally but also to Australia due to the high potential for cross-border transmission between PNG’s Western Province and the Australian Torres Strait Islands. We present two mathematical models of TB in the Western Province: a simple model of the underlying TB dynamics, and a detailed model which accounts for the additional effects of HIV and drug resistance. The detailed model is used to make quantitative predictions about the impact of expanding the TB case detection rate under the Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course treatment regimen. This paper provides a framework for future investigation into the economic costs and public health benefits of potential TB interventions in this region, with the eventual aim of providing recommendations to guide policy makers in both PNG and Australia.

This paper presents the first analytical solutions for the three-dimensional motion of two idealized mobiles controlled by a particular guidance law designed to avoid a collision with minimal path deviation. The mobiles can be regarded as particles, and guidance can be interpreted as complex forces of interaction between the particles. The motion is then a generalized form of two-body Newtonian dynamics. If the mobiles have equal speeds, the relative motion is determined through various transformations of the differential equations. Solvability relies on congruence and symmetries of the paths, which is exploited to reduce the original twelve first-order differential equations to three first-order equations for the relative motion. The resulting state space is partitioned into five invariant subsets, with various symmetries and stabilities. One of these sets describes planar motion, where simple explicit solutions are given. In nonplanar motion, the solution is formally reduced to quadrature. A numerical calculation gives the separation at the closest point of approach, which provides control over minimum separation. The results should be of interest because of their application, which includes, most importantly, the prevention of midair collisions between aircraft, but also potential application to land, water and space vehicles. The solutions should be of interest to mathematical specialists in dynamical systems, because of some novel constants of the motion, novel symmetries, and the associated reducibility of the equations.

The effect of initial stresses on incident quasi SV-waves at a plane interface between two dissimilar pre-stressed elastic half-spaces is investigated. The reflection and refraction coefficients of the reflected and refracted qSV- and qP-waves are derived with the help of appropriate boundary conditions. The coefficients are found to be functions of the angle of incidence and the initial stresses and incremental elastic parameters of the pre-stressed elastic half-spaces.

A thin liquid film subject to a temperature gradient is known to deform under the action of thermocapillary stresses which induce convective cells. The free surface deformation can be thought of as the signature of the imposed temperature gradient, and this study investigates the inverse problem of trying to reconstruct the temperature field from known free surface variations. The present work builds on the analysis of Tan et al. [“Steady thermocapillary flows of thin liquid layers I. Theory”, Phys. Fluids A2 (1990) 313–321, doi:10.1063/1.857781] which provides a long-wave evolution equation for the fluid film thickness variation on nonuniformly heated substrates and proposes a solution strategy for the planar flow version of this inverse problem. The present analysis reveals a particular case for which there exists an explicit, closed-form solution expressing the local substrate temperature in terms of the local film thickness and its spatial derivatives. With some simplifications, this analysis also shows that this solution applies to three-dimensional flows. The temperature reconstruction strategies are successfully tested against “artificial” experimental data (obtained by solving the direct problem for known temperature profiles) and actual experimental data.

A boundary-value problem for cell growth leads to an eigenvalue problem. In this paper some properties of the eigenfunctions are studied. The first eigenfunction is a probability density function and is of importance in the cell growth model. We sharpen an earlier uniqueness result and show that the distribution is unimodal. We then show that the higher eigenfunctions have nested zeros. We show that the eigenfunctions are not mutually orthogonal, but that there are certain orthogonality relations that effectively partition the set of eigenfunctions into two sets.

A class of problems modelling the contact between nonlinearly elastic materials and rigid foundations is analysed for static processes under the small deformation hypothesis. In the present paper, the contact between the body and the foundation can be frictional bilateral or frictionless unilateral. For every mechanical problem in the class considered, we derive a weak formulation consisting of a nonlinear variational equation and a variational inequality involving dual Lagrange multipliers. The weak solvability of the models is established by using saddle-point theory and a fixed-point technique. This approach is useful for the development of efficient algorithms for approximating weak solutions.

This paper considers singular systems that involve both continuous dynamics and discrete events with the coefficients being modulated by a continuous-time Markov chain. The underlying systems have two distinct characteristics. First, the systems are singular, that is, characterized by a singular coefficient matrix. Second, the Markov chain of the modulating force has a large state space. We focus on stability of such hybrid singular systems. To carry out the analysis, we use a two-time-scale formulation, which is based on the rationale that, in a large-scale system, not all components or subsystems change at the same speed. To highlight the different rates of variation, we introduce a small parameter ε>0. Under suitable conditions, the system has a limit. We then use a perturbed Lyapunov function argument to show that if the limit system is stable then so is the original system in a suitable sense for ε small enough. This result presents a perspective on reduction of complexity from a stability point of view.

The creeping flow of an incompressible viscous liquid past a porous approximately spherical shell is considered. The flow in the free fluid region outside the shell and in the cavity region of the shell is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations. The flow within the porous annular region of the shell is governed by Brinkman’s model. The boundary conditions used at the interface are continuity of the velocity, continuity of the pressure and Ochoa-Tapia and Whitaker’s stress jump condition. An exact solution for the problem and an expression for the drag on the porous approximately spherical shell are obtained. The drag is evaluated numerically for several values of the parameters governing the flow.

The problem of stagnation point flow with heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid impinging normally on a permeable axisymmetric surface in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field is analysed. The governing nonlinear differential equations and their associated boundary conditions are reduced to dimensionless form using suitable similarity transformations. Comparison with previously published work shows good agreement. Effects of the injection–suction parameter, magnetic parameter and Prandtl number on the flow and thermal fields are presented. The investigations show that the wall shear stress and heat transfer rate from the surface increase with increased applied magnetic field. An increase in the velocity and thermal boundary layer thicknesses is observed with an increase in the wall injection, while the velocity and thermal boundary layers become thinner when increasing the wall suction and applied magnetic field.

We investigate natural convection cooling of the fluid in a drink can placed in a refrigerator by simulating the full combined boundary layer system on the can wall. The cylindrical can is filled with water at initial nondimensional temperature 0, and located within a larger cylindrical container filled with air at initial temperature −1. The outer container walls are maintained at constant temperature −1. Initially both fluids are at rest. Two configurations are examined: the first has the inner can placed vertically in the middle of the outer container with no contact with the outer container walls, and the second has the inner can placed vertically at the bottom of the outer container. The results are compared to those obtained by assuming that the inner can walls are maintained at a constant temperature, showing similar basic flow features and scaling relations, but with very different proportionality constants.

The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is applied to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) emerging from a closure model of the von Kármán–Howarth equation which models the decay of isotropic turbulence. In the infinite Reynolds number limit, the von Kármán–Howarth equation admits a symmetry reduction leading to the aforementioned one-parameter ODE. Though the latter equation is not fully integrable, it can be integrated once for two particular parameter values and, for one of these values, the relevant boundary conditions can also be satisfied. The key result of this paper is that for the generic case, HAM is employed such that solutions for arbitrary parameter values are derived. We obtain explicit analytical solutions by recursive formulas with constant coefficients, using some transformations of variables in order to express the solutions in polynomial form. We also prove that the Loitsyansky invariant is a conservation law for the asymptotic form of the original equation.
