Le thème central de la note critique de Jackie Assayag est une comparaison entre Camphor Flame et Homo hierarchicus de Louis Dumont. J. Assayag a raison d'écrire que mon livre s'oppose délibérément au reductionnisme sociologique dumontien, et d'insister sur l'idée que, contrairement à ce qu'avance Homo hierarchicus, l'hindouisme est un phénomène religieux ayant son propre contenu distinct irréductible à l'idéologie de la caste.
