Some features of the chemical limnology of a hypertrophic, gravel-pit lake close to Madrid (Spain) have been studied at weekly intervals throughout a year. El Porcal Lake in an alkaline, slightly saline, water body without surface inflow or outflow. Anoxia is a common feature below the 2 m level from May to September. Dissolved oxygen oversaturation and pH above 9,00 occurred frequently in surface waters throughout the study period. Alkalinity totalled to 2,5-3,5 meq.l-1, bicarbonate being the main inorganic carbon fraction. Inorganic carbon is a key parameter in the chemistry of the lake, as indicated by statistical correlations. Nitrate and nitrite values were very high, probably as a result of high nitrification rates. Ammonia levels were lower than those of nitrite and nitrate. Soluble Reactive Phosphorus ranged over three orders of magnitude, sometimes occurring below detection limits. No plankton collapses have been observed but frequent oscillations in the chemical parameters have been the rule during the whole year. Groundwater seepage might be a very important source of nutrients. Most of the chemical features showed time lags of a week in autocorrelation functions, suggesting an unknown control mechanism for the temporal dynamics of the chemical limnology of El Porcal Lake.

Trente-sept sites de la région de Marrakech (dayas, bassins permanents et réservoirs) ont été prospectés régulièrement pendant un an. Les analyses factorielles de correspondance, qu'elles soient réalisées à partir des descripteurs ou à partir des facteurs biotiques (133 taxons de Desmidiées), permettent de visualiser les mêmes typologies au sein des biotopes étudiés. A la lumière de ces résultats, les Desmidiées apparaissent comme de bons indicateurs dans l'appréciation de la qualité chimique des eaux du Sud du Maroc.

Le site de l'Ile du Grand Gravier constitue un champ captant pour l'alimentation en eau potable de 80 000 équivalent-habitants. Sa situation dans le fleuve Rhône, à l'aval immédiat de l'agglomération lyonnaise et du couloir de la chimie, pose le problème de la vulnérabilité de la ressource en eau à une pollution du fleuve. Le site a fait l'objet de recherches hydrauliques et biologiques au niveau d'une parcelle expérimentale. L'étude des oligochètes a permis de dresser le diagnostic d'un état de pollution important du fleuve sur le secteur envisagé. Il apparaît de plus que certains taxons d'oligochètes, en particulier le genre Phallodrilus, décrivent une augmentation des échanges nappe-cours d'eau. L'ensemble de ces données souligne la vulnérabilité du site à une pollution transitant par le Rhône. Les résultats de cette première approche sont discutés. Il s'avère notamment que les aspects saisonniers n'ont pas été pris en considération. Le développement de la méthodologie est envisagé par l'étude complète de plusieurs autres parcelles.

Cette étude porte sur les communautés d'Oligochètes aquatiques vivant dans une petite rivière atlantique, le Tambre, et ses milieux associés (lagune, lac de barrage, ria). Elle concerne la répartition spatiale des différentes populations et l'analyse des principaux facteurs qui la déterminent. Des données de l'évolution saisonnière des principales populations et des périodes de reproduction complètent l'inventaire faunistique des Oligochètes récoltés dans ces milieux.

Ce travail concerne les données faunistiques et écologiques relatives aux espèces italiennes du genre Torrenticola recueillies dans l'Apennin. Treize espèces ont été signalées, cinq sont nouvelles pour la faune italienne (T. similis, T. lativalvata, T. brevirostris, T. ungeri et T. amplexa). L'étude des caractères dimensionels a permis d'individualiser quelques indices morphologiques de valeur discriminante à un niveau spécifique et a permis de mettre en synonymie quatre espèces. Une distribution différente des espèces entre les secteurs de l'Apennin abruzzin et calabrais a été aussi mise en évidence. L'importance du microhabitat, déterminée par la typologie du cours d'eau, a été soulignée afin d'expliquer la distribution géographique des espèces dans le bassin méditerranéen.

Sublittoral and profundal chironomid community structure, depth distribution and relationship to the trophic level of the waters were investigated in Lake Vico (Central Italy) during 1985-1986. PCA analysis indicated a depth-dependent group of true profundal stations at 20, 30 and 40 m depths, characterized by Micropsectra, Procladius, Microtendipes, Tanytarsus and Paratendipes, and a group of 10 m stations, characterized by Cryptochironomus, Polypedilum bicrenatum gr., Cladopelma lateralis gr. and C. laccophila gr., representing the sublittoral features of this depth. In agreement with the chemical data, the chironomid community indicated a mesotrophic condition of Lake Vico, with a tendency towards an increasing trophic level in the deepest zone. A significant role in revealing future trophic changes in the lake may be attributed to the key-indicator Micropsectra.

Distribution and ecology of macroinvertebrates in the Opunohu River catchment (17°31'S, 149°S 50'W), Moorea, French Polynesia, were studied at eight sites, which range in altitude from 2 to 335 m, and from 0.4 to 4.0 km distance from the ocean. Taxa richness per site ranged from 16 to 28, and was higher in austral spring than austral fall ; 48 taxa were collected over all sites and included 7 species of molluscs, 6 crustaceans, 23 insects, and 6 oligochaetes. Neritid snails and atyid and palaemonid shrimp in the Opunohu have diadromous life cycles : they enter freshwater as juveniles and migrate upstream ; their larval offspring must return to the sea for growth and metamorphosis. These groups generally had larger individuals at upstream than at downstream sites. Human activities such as channeling stream flow through elevated culverts can impede normal upstream migration of diadromous species. Densities of neritid egg capsules were higher in riffle than pool habitats, exhibited seasonality, and were highest at the downstream-most site ; abundance at upstream sites also reflected local habitat conditions. Microhabitat segregation of two species of atyiid shrimp reflected their respective filter-feeding and detritus-gathering feeding mechanisms. High pH and temperatures in the poorly buffered, cascade headwaters produced high seston loads (3.4 mg/l) that mainly contained diatoms ; in downstream reaches seston concentrations were lower and contained more detritus. Some filter-feeding black fly species occured only in the headwaters. Insect taxa-richness was higher in headwater reaches while mollusc and crustacean richness was higher at sites near the ocean, which supports a tenet of the River Continuum Concept.
