Studies on the nutritive value of the diet selected by grazing sheep VII. A note on hand plucking as a technique for estimating dietary composition

Summary

The digestibility and N contents of samples collected by oesophageally-fistulated sheep and by hand plucking were compared. Hand plucking overestimated nutritive value at high levels of digestibility and N content, and underestimated nutritive value when this was low. The differences between fistula and hand-plucked samples varied between pastures. Precision was increased when samples were combined between operators.
