Extract

This paper will attempt to present a picture of the Soviet system for the bibliographical listing of all printed matter published in the Soviet Union.

These listings are accomplished through official bibliographical publications, compiled and issued by the "Vsesojuznaja Knizhnaja Palata" (All-Union Book Chamber) located in Moscow, which was established in 1920 and has existed since then under a number of official names.

5 Due to this inadequate listing of material in Knizhnaja Letopis’ during the early year! of the USSR, one must turn to the various publishers’ catalogues for these years, e.g., the catalogues of the Academy of Sciences (Sistemeticheskij ukazatel’ izdanii Akademii NaiA SSSR vyshedshikh v svet s ljanv. 1917g. po 1 sent. 1925g. Leningrad, 1925, p. 127), the catalogue of the Government Publishing House (Katalog izdanii Gosudarstvennogo izdatel'stva, 1919- 1925. Moscow, 1927, p. 500), and many others. Also of great importance are the numerous subject bibliographies covering the early years of the USSR. Although this article deals with national bibliographies, it was felt that the more important of these bibliographies, on subjects of interest to the readers of this journal, should be pointed out.

6 A list of the types of indexes published for the various years of the bibliography, and their periodicity, is included in the above cited book of Sokurova (footnote No. 4), pp. 203- 09.

7 From 1908 to 1917, the title of this section was “Letopis’ povremmennoj pechati;” in 1918, “PredvariteFmyi spisok povremennykh izdanii“; from 1920 to 1922, “Perechen’ v alfavitnom porjadke povremennykh izdanii“; in 1924, “Letopis’ periodicheskoj pechati“; in 1925, “Periodicheskaja pechat’ “; from 1939 to 1944, “Novye i pereimenovannyc gazety i zhurnaly.“

9 Sokurova, op. cit., p. 175.

10 In addition to these listings in Knizhnaja Letopis', many other attempts were made to list periodical publications before 1933, when an official organ was established for this purpose. Most of these bibliographies had a short existence of a year or two, or even less. For a year by year analysis of most of these bibliographies, as well as of foreign bibliographies to twentieth-century Russian periodicals, see my article, “Bibliographical Guides to Russian Periodical Publications, 1901-1956,” in College and Research Libraries, 19 (May, 1958), 209-16.
