The aim of the present study is to develop a relatively simple flight dynamic model which should have the ability to analyse trim, stability and response characteristics of a rotorcraft under various manoeuvring conditions. This study further addresses the influence of numerical aspects of perturbation step size in linearised model identification and integration timestep on non-linear model response. In addition, the effects of inflow models on the non-linear response are analysed. A new updated Drees inflow model is proposed in this study and the applicability of this model in rotorcraft flight dynamics is studied. It is noted that the updated Drees inflow model predicts the control response characteristics fairly close to control response characteristics obtained using dynamic inflow for a wide range of flight conditions such as hover, forward flight and recovery from steady level turn. A comparison is shown between flight test data, the control response obtained from the simple flight dynamic model, and the response obtained using a more detailed aeroelastic and flight dynamic model.

One of the key challenges of the gas turbine community is to empower the condition based maintenance with simulation, diagnostic and prognostic tools which improve the reliability and availability of the engines. Within this context, the inverse adaptive modelling methods have generated much attention for their capability to tune engine models for matching experimental test data and/or simulation data. In this study, an integrated performance adaptation system for estimating the steady-state off-design performance of gas turbines is presented. In the system, a novel method for compressor map generation and a genetic algorithm-based method for engine off-design performance adaptation are introduced. The methods are integrated into PYTHIA gas turbine simulation software, developed at Cranfield University and tested with experimental data of an aero derivative gas turbine. The results demonstrate the promising capabilities of the proposed system for accurate prediction of the gas turbine performance. This is achieved by matching simultaneously a set of multiple off-design operating points. It is proven that the proposed methods and the system have the capability to progressively update and refine gas turbine performance models with improved accuracy, which is crucial for model-based gas path diagnostics and prognostics.

This paper attempts to develop an efficient online algorithm for terrain following in completely unknown rough terrain environments while incorporating aircraft dynamics in the guidance strategy. Unlike most existing works, the proposed algorithm does not generate the flight path directly. The algorithm employs acquired information from the vehicle onboard sensors and rapidly issues appropriate Guidance Commands (GCs) at every point along the way. A suitable dynamic model is developed which takes the lags in the vehicle dynamics into account. The flight path forms gradually as a result of applying the GCs to the vehicle dynamics. Terrain-conforming capability afforded by this approach allows for autonomous and safe low-level flight in unknown mountainous areas. It considerably enhances the autonomy level of the vehicle and in the case of manned aircraft could significantly lead to pilot workload reduction. The proposed scheme is proven to be promising for online applications.

A current trend in the aeronautic industry is to increase the wing aspect ratio to enhance aerodynamic efficiency by reducing the induced drag and thus reduce fuel consumption. Despite the associated benefits of a large aspect ratio, such as higher lift-to-drag ratios and range, commercial aircraft usually have a relatively low aspect ratio. This is partially explained by the fact that the wing becomes more flexible with increasing aspect ratio and thus more prone to large deflections, which can cause aeroelastic instability problems such as flutter. In this work, an aeroelastic study is conducted on a rectangular wing model of 20 m span and variable chord for a low subsonic speed condition to evaluate the differences between linear and non-linear static aeroelastic responses. Comparisons between linear and non-linear displacements, natural frequencies and flutter boundary are performed. An in-house non-linear aeroelastic framework was employed for this purpose. In this work, the influence of the aspect ratio and geometric non-linearity (highly deformed states) is assessed in terms of aeroelastic performance parameters: flutter speed and divergence speed. A nearly linear correlation of flutter speed difference (relative to linear analysis results) with vertical-tip displacement difference is observed. The flutter and divergence speeds vary substantially as the wing aspect ratio increases, and the divergence speeds always remain above the flutter speed. Furthermore, the flutter mechanism was observed to change as the wing chord is decreased.

The results of extensive experimental testing of an aero-engine air-oil separator are presented and discussed. The study focuses on the pressure loss of the system. Oil enters the device in the form of dispersed droplets. Subsequently, separation occurs by centrifuging larger droplets towards the outer walls and by film formation at the inner surface of a rotating porous material, namely an open-cell metal foam. The work described here is part of a study led jointly by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the University of Nottingham (UNott) within a recent EU project.

The goal of the research is to increase the separation efficiency to mitigate oil consumption and emissions, while keeping the pressure loss as low as possible. The aim is to determine the influencing factors on pressure loss and separation efficiency. With this knowledge, a correlation can eventually be derived. Experiments were conducted for three different separator configurations, one without a metal foam and two with metal foams of different pore sizes. For each configuration, a variety of engine-like conditions of air mass flow rate, rotational speed and droplet size was investigated. The experimental results were used to validate and improve the numerical modelling.

Results for the pressure drop and its dependencies on air mass flow rate and the rotational speed were analysed. It is shown that the swirling flow and the dissipation of angular momentum are the most important contributors to the pressure drop, besides the losses due to friction and dissipation caused by the flow passing the metal foam. It was found that the ratio of the rotor speed and the tangential velocity of the fluid is an important parameter to describe the influence of rotation on the pressure loss. Contrary to expectations, the pressure loss is not necessarily increased with a metal foam installed.
