Book description

The Rise and Decline of an Iberian Bourgeoisie is one of the first long-term studies in English of an Iberian town during the late medieval crisis. Focusing on the Catalonian city of Manresa, Jeff Fynn-Paul expertly integrates Iberian historiography with European narratives to place the city's social, political and economic development within the broader context of late medieval urban decline. Drawing from extensive archival research, including legal and administrative records, royal letters, and a cadastral survey of more than 640 households entitled the 1408 Liber Manifesti, the author surveys the economic strategies of both elites and non-elites to a level previously unknown for any medieval town outside of Tuscany and Ghent. In a major contribution to the series, The Rise and Decline of an Iberian Bourgeoisie reveals how a combination of the Black Death, royal policy, and a new public debt system challenged, and finally undermined urban resilience in Catalonia.

Reviews

'I suspect that Fynn-Paul’s book will become a model study that will shape future work on medieval urban history. His diligence in capitalising on this underutilised treasure trove of documentation will surely influence the ongoing scholarly conversation regarding the broad political and economic trends of the later Middle Ages.'

'Jeff Fynn-Paul provides a promising contribution to Spanish urban history in the later Middle Ages. Telling the story of the Catalan city of Manresa over the fourteenth century, he wisely combines three historiographical traditions (Iberian, English and European) in order to approach this region’s position in the larger late medieval urban history.'

Most of the unpublished sources used in this study are housed in the Arxiu Comarcal del Bages (ACBG; Regional Archive of the Bages), until recently known as the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Manresa (AHCM; Archive of the City of Manresa). Some additional material on royal government is located in the Arxiu de la Corona d'Aragó (ACA; Archive of the Crown of Aragon in Barcelona). Much of the economic data in Chapters 6 and 7 comes from manuscripts housed in the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona (AHCB; Archive of the City of Barcelona) and in the Arxiu Capitular de Barcelona (ACB; Archive of Barcelona Cathedral).

These are the official record of the proceedings of the town government. The meetings usually took place in the parish church of St Miquel, now destroyed, or in the refrectory of the monastery of the Carmelite friars. The manuals I-2 through I-11 were used most extensively in this study. Cited volumes coming before and after these were consulted but their contents were not recorded in minute detail. Registers are followed by their opening and closing dates.

AHCM/AM I-165

These commence only from after the Black Death. The volumes used most extensively were:

These begin in 1276, but many registers are fragmentary. The volumes consulted most extensively were:

These record expenses and other information regarding work on the Cathedral, and have been used here for wage data, and for a few instances of the price of calç (lime). They were eschewed by Hamilton because they did not provide an unbroken series of commodity prices. The registers are labelled only by year. Those used most extensively were the volumes covering the period 1367–1400.

The records of the city treasurer.

The expense accounts of the Obrers, who oversaw civic engineering projects.

The records of the Barcelona city council, known as the Consell de Cent. These were consulted in order to inform some of the readings of the Manresan council manuals that are presented above.

This was one of the very few registers in the ACA dedicated to the fourteenth-century royal administration of Manresa and the Bages, excepting the royal letters of the Cancelleria Reial, which were not utilized for this study. However, much important correspondence between the king and the city has been preserved in the Llibre Verd de Manresa, which has been edited and published by Marc Torras Serra.
