Summary

Soon after this, Reynard came across Baldwin the ass, who was very heavily laden. His master had let him go on ahead. Reynard stopped him and said: “Baldwin, why do you put up with this? How can you live with such a heavy burden? If you come with me, I can rescue you from all this and can give you enough …” [552–562 (There is a gap in the manuscripts here. The French texts do not have the incident, and it varies elsewhere, but in one known version, Baldwin is used in a complicated trick, which ends up, significantly, with Isengrim the wolf being castrated in a trap.)]
