Summary
A: French-language editions
The Hague
Between 1705 and 1761, Pierre Husson from The Hague and his heirs printed seven French editions of the Nights under the uniform title ‘Les mille et une nuit, contes arabes. Traduits en François par Mr. Galland, de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Médailles’. Only significant variants will be noted. The first and second editions do not exist. No single Husson edition contains the full range of parts 1-12. Several parts of one single edition were printed more than once. All editions contain frontispiece engravings by David Coster (c.1680-1752); for details see below, Appendix 2.
¶ 1. Troisiéme Edition, revuë et corrigée, Suivant la Copie imprimée a Paris. Tomes 1-6. A La Haye, Chez Pierre Husson, Marchand Libraire, au coin du Capel brug, 1705-1706.
The first edition by Pierre Husson (1678-1733). Description based on tome 3 (1706) [Leiden UB, MRIJKE 1566]. Tomes 1-2 of the same Leiden copy, dated 1705, have Nuits instead of Nuit, ‘Suivant la Copie de Paris’ instead of ‘Suivant la Copie imprimée a Paris’ and lack an imprint. 1 (1705); 2 (1705, 1706); 3-6 (1706).
¶ 2. Quatriéme Edition, revuë et corrigée, Suivant la Copie imprimée a Paris. Tomes 1-8. A La Haye, Chez Pierre Husson Marchand Libraire, au coin du Capel brug, 1707-1719.
The relatively early date of tomes 1 and 7 (1707) led to a slight irregularity in the chronological order of the subsequent editions. Description based on tome 7 (1707) [Leiden UB, MRIJKE 1566]. 1 (1707); 2 (1714); 3 (1714, 1719); 4 (1714); 5 (1715); 6 (1716); 7 (1707); 8 (1714).
¶ 3. Cinquiéme Edition, revuë et corrigée. Tomes 1-8. A La Haye, Chez Pierre Husson Marchand Libraire, sur le Capelbrug, 1714-1743.
This edition dates basically from 1728-1729. The notice ‘Suivant la Copie imprimée a Paris’ is lacking. The address has changed from ‘au coin du Capel brug’ to ‘sur le Capelbrug’. Description based on tome 8 (1728) [Leiden UB, MRIJKE 1566]. 1 (1714, 1728); 2 (1728, 1729); 3-4 (1729); 5-6 (1728); 7 (1719, 1729); 8 (1719, 1728, 1743).
¶ 4. Sixiéme Edition, revuë et corrigée. Tomes 1-7. A La Haye, Chez Jean Martin Husson, 1729-1746.
The first edition by Jean Martin Husson (1706-1746) or his widow Maria Korsendonk (d. 1790), although tome 1 (1729, not seen) must have been published by Pierre Husson. Tome 8 is lacking – the 5th ed. had been reprinted as late as 1743.
