Summary
This chapter considers Words of the Luminaries (4Q504–506), a seven-day liturgy structured according to Israelite history, and that proceeds through a series of patterned historical narratives concerning knowledge, glory, and election. Three episodes in particular are “sharpened” to function as focusing paradigms through which the community is encouraged to understand themselves and the purpose of their narratively structured prayer: 1) the creation of Adam, 2) the sojourn in the wilderness, and 3) the intercession of Moses. This performance of historical knowledge is presented not only as something to be possessed or taught by the community but also as evidence of an epistemological transformation in the present generation. This transformation, furthermore, is sufficient to demonstrate their ability to atone for their sins and the sins of past generations.
