Summary

Evidence-based medicine is the process of systematically finding, appraising and using contemporaneous research findings as the basis for clinical decisions (Rosenberg and Donald, 1995). Sometimes the term evidenced-based practice is used to reflect that the principles and practice can be applied in a wide variety of clinical situations.

The key steps in evidence-based medicine are:

  • Developing the clinical question

  • Searching the literature and identifying relevant articles and other resources relevant to the question

  • Critically appraising the evidence to assess its validity and relevance

  • Assessing the quality of evidence

  • Applying the evidence.
