Summary
Mr and Mrs A have been married for four years and have one child three years of age. They have recently moved from a furnished flat to a new council house on an estate at the outskirts of the city. The wife, Anne, has not worked since she had her baby, but before that she was in a clerical job. Her husband, Alan, works in the health service and has had his present job for the past eight years. Alan is an incomer to the city, but Anne has lived in or near Aberdeen all her life. Her parents and brothers still live here.
Mr and Mrs B have been married for sixteen years. Betty is in her late thirties and Bob is in his early forties. When they first married Bob had a job which took him away from Aberdeen for quite long periods of time, but he got a local job when his second child, a boy, was born. He is now in a managerial post. Before marriage Betty was a nurse, but she gave up her job as soon as she knew she was pregnant with her first child, and had no outside employment for the following twelve years. For the past three years however she has had a part-time clerical post, which she says she enjoys very much. The couple have recently bought a small house in Aberdeen (they previously owned a flat), and talk with enthusiasm of renovating and redecorating it.
