Summary

[In the following list of plays, an endeavour has been made to include all the theatrical entertainments as well as the regular dramas produced for the first time within the first half of the eighteenth century. The titles are given from the original editions; the dates which follow in brackets are of the first performances; and the years of publication are presented thereafter. All plays printed copies of which I have been unable to see are marked with an asterisk. The majority of these were in all probability never published, but the fact that no attempt has hitherto been made to collect eighteenth century dramas or to outline the bibliography of the subject renders this a particularly difficult question. Where I have found indication of publication in the Biographia Dramatica or elsewhere I have inserted the particulars given in these sources. It will be recognised that the details given here are of necessity incomplete, as, apart from the fact that I have not attempted to trace the history of any play into the sixties or seventies of the eighteenth century, the lack of bibliographical research into this subject prevents a full and exhaustive summary. Following the information concerning the editions, I have given an outline of performances of each play up to the year 1750. It will be understood that this outline is also incomplete.
