Summary

Another busy month of visits. Gwynne began to put into operate his scheme for a chain of command for chaplains with ACGs general at each army headquarters. Towards the end of the month, Gwynne paid a short visit to the CG. A series of actions took place between British and German forces around St Eloi.

1 March

Ensell* spent last night with me left today. Harry Dibben* who came in last night came in over strained in nerves and looked after by Pym* and put into hospital here at S. Omer. He was not really bad but on the verge of a break down. We all feel he will be well soon.

2 March

Saw Harry Dibben* off this morning from the Officers Hospital. After work in the office went to Lestrem to confirm with the 35th Division (Bantams.) Pinney the General was very good to us and gave all the clergy tea and allowed me to see them afterwards in his private room. I motored back by about 6.30 and did some work.

3 March

After the mornings work in the office motored to Fleming* at Lillers to keep a confirmation in his Division, 47th. It was a cold snowy day. I saw Beattie the Brigade Major in the same mess as young Woods. I brought Fleming* as far as Aire to stay with Blackburne*.

4 March

Confirmed at Poperinghe in Talbot House this afternoon and saw John Ponsonby afterwards. Rogers* and Neville Talbot* and Clayton* etc., were all there. I took Canon Scott* with me and motored to Ballieul to visit the Canadians. At 6.30 we had a most harmonious dinner. Canon Almond* entertained all his chaplains of all denominations and speeches were made afterwards. Presbyterians, Methodists and R.Cs. came and then after wh. I was to pray and give a blessing.

5 March

I preached three times and visited every Brigadier in the Division as well as the Divisional Generals. I heard an amusing story from the Canadians. Two men who had drunk more than they ought as a punishment were sent out to fix wire in front of the trenches. While the others were working they crept into a shell hole and slept off the drunkenness.
