Summary

CORYTON

Two militia rates survive for this West Devon parish located twelve miles south-west of Okehampton and seven miles north of Tavistock. In 1630 Thomas Westcote wrote in A View of Devonshire that this parish was ‘a place of no great note’. He also noted that the Coryton family had moved to Cornwall.

48. CORYTON, Militia Rates, 1643

Note: This rate was written on a sheet of paper which measures nearly 12 inches in width and 7¾ inches in length. The numerals are Roman. The heading refers to the Grand Subsidy of May 1643 which was concerned with Ireland. About 3 per cent of the population contributed to the rates.

Coriton pish

The money wch Thomas Steert, Walter Hollock & William Nicole gathered of the Gransipsidie rate wthin the pish of Coriton having neither rate nor Warrant but gathered it for the militia wth out any authoryty

Some is nine Pounds & fowerteen shillings Besides two horses Thomas Steert put forth out of the pish when the militia was going for Stratton.

Some is Five pounds six shillings & two pence

Besides one rate more wch Thomas Steert gathered since for Carryage of his owne hay to Ockehampton to the Militia Army when the weare for Stratton he gathered this rate since Whitsontide.
