Summary

N.B. The entries here are given in chronological order: Blatt 14r to Blatt 57v, then backward from Blatt 13v to Blatt 1r.

[Blatt 14r]:

DR. SMETANA [presumably at his office, Alter Fleischmarkt No. 695; seemingly Monday, April 21, continuing from Blatt 20r]: The tea will be boiled like any other common pectoral herb tea. Immediately upon awaking, while still in bed, drink a little cup full, and a second one upon going to sleep. //

NEPHEW KARL [at Beethoven's apartment; presumably ca. 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 20]: From 11 [in the morning] to 7 [in the evening]. //

Tablecloth. // [Blatt 14v]

That is only a custom; at the Institute it happens in order to get as much [food?] as possible. //

[largely writing on behalf of brother Johann:]

On the list given to the emperor, someone placed a Mass that was to be performed on Sunday; but he struck it out and said that he wanted the kind of Mass that Beethoven had received, according to which he [Beethoven] was to write a [Mass] for him. [//] [Blatt 15r]

Diabelli said that if you write another 10 Masses, he would be happy take all 10 for the same price. // Your brother learned that on the sly. //

Steiner has gone to Leipzig. Haslinger sends you greetings in deepest respect. // Are you lending Schuppanzigh the Overture for his Academie? //

[preparing for midday dinner:]

Is the pastry coming sooner or the meat? [//] [Blatt 15v]

Are you writing to Ries tomorrow, or is he [Johann] supposed to write?8 // He will write. //

[writing for himself, then partially for Johann:]

Did you perhaps lend out the 1821 run of the Modezeitung? I cannot find it. The volume from 1821. //

The piece [of meat] cannot be done differently. It is also only stewed. // The season for wild game is over now; it too is only stewed. [//] [Blatt 16r]

The edition of Sophocles has been ordered, but has not yet arrived; in the meantime I am reading Prometheus by Aeschylus. //

Are you still heating [the apartment]? //
