Summary

[Blatt 1r]

SCHLÖSSER [at Beethoven's apartment at Obere Pfarrgasse 60 in suburban

Windmühle; probably the late morning of Thursday, March 20]:

For several months.

If perhaps you wanted to send a reply to Darmstadt, a courier is going there on Sunday [March 23].// I myself shall happily come to pick up the reply. //

As Rheinlanders, we are indeed almost fellow countrymen. [//] [Blatt 1v]

I also study composition with Herr Seyfried and have already written several works. [//] A string quartet of mine has now been engraved. [//] I have also sent a melodrama, Correggio, to the grand duke in Darmstadt. [//]

Vogler was a privy councillor and wore a Star. [//] [Blatt 2r] Have you heard his Samori? [//] Everything is too calculated and pedantic. //

I wish that you could hear the Kapelle [orchestra] of Darmstadt once; it is really quite excellent, and the theater very beautiful. [//]

Will your new Mass [Missa solemnis] be heard fairly soon? [//]

Do we have your Fidelio [in Darmstadt]? [//]

He [probably Schleiermacher] is sick even now. [//] [Blatt 2v] He is already 67 years old. [//]

I shall remain here another 2 months and then travel to Paris. [//] The hot summer. [//] I wanted to spend the winter here. [//] They say that there is nothing to hear in the summer. [//]

I came to Vienna with several other expectations, the way artists are rewarded. [//]

I don't know Koch. [//]

I didn't think that you could lament about it. [//] [Blatt 3r]

Do you know that the university in Bonn is really blossoming? [//] One must be silent here [in Vienna]. [//]

Which Akademie? [//]

So, are you considered an Austrian subject? [//]

In our case, a person must spend one year at the regional university, and then wherever he wants. [//] But for music, one can profit a great deal here. [//] As a violinist, I enjoy the instruction of Mayseder. Spohr, with whom I corresponded, especially recommended Paris to me for the violin. [//] [Blatt 3v] Baillot. Lafont. [//]
