Summary
Typical questions
• Can I get access to Granma online?
• I want to do a discourse analysis of UK newspaper coverage of the 2012 Olympics.
Starting points
• Newspapers are valuable for coverage of the most recent events and for offering insight into social, political and economic history.
• Note that newspaper articles are usually not indexed in journal databases. Students conducting literature searches need to be reminded to search both.
• Most libraries subscribe to large newspaper databases containing hundreds of titles. These are usually accessed via the library catalogue rather than via newspaper homepages or Google.
• There may be separate databases for current and historic titles. Check coverage and what is required.
• Current services may have a time delay. For the latest headlines, the newspaper homepage may be more up to date. Content may also exclude user comment, some blogs and special reports.
• Many current newspaper databases do not contain images. If these are unavailable locally, try searching Library Hub Discover service (https://discover.libraryhub.jisc.ac.uk) which provides information on research library holdings of newspapers. However, be aware that electronic database licenses (especially for current titles) often prohibit visitor access. In these cases try public libraries, public record offices and the British Library, which has digitised and microfilm collections (www.bl.uk/collection-guides/newspapers).
• This section highlights general resources. Specialist services are mentioned in the subject sections. TV news is covered in the Films, Documentaries and TV Programmes chapter.
