S-754. M’COLLUM, Asa.

A defence, of the Thomsonian mode of practising medicine, as established at the Leicester Infirmary, Mass… . Worcester: Printed for the publisher, 1836.

47 p. ; 23 cm.

In October 1834 Asa M’Collum, a Thomsonian agent and practitioner in Leicester, Mass., was taken to court by Edward (or Edwin) Lawrence, a former patient, for “intending to extort money from the people of said Leicester and its vicinity and to injure and defraud the plaintiff and extort money from him” by “falsely and maliciously” pretending “to be a skilful and learned physician, and to have great skill and knowledge in the art of medicine and of curing the diseases and maladies of the human body, well knowing that he had no such skill and knowledge.” The writ against him charged M’Collum with administering to Lawrence over a period of two months “powerful and deleterious drugs” and subjecting him to steam baths, whereby “the plaintiff has suffered great distress and pain of body and mind, and has ever since been unable to labor for the support of himself and family, and is deprived of all hope of restoration to health” (p. 40-41).

In his own defense M’Collum provides twenty-three pages of depositions from patients whom he successfully treated, and who knew Lawrence in the spring of 1833 when the latter was also treated by M’Collum with apparent benefit. M’Collum generously garnishes his Defence with invective against the hegemony of doctors, lawyers and clergymen, whom he charges with goading Lawrence into legal action.
