1994 Samuel Sanford Professor of Music from the Yale School of Music.

1997 Governor's Award from the state of Connecticut.

1999 Honorary Doctorate of Music from Shenandoah University.

2001 Award of Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

2002 Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Penn State University.

2002 Gustave Stoeckel Award from YSM.

2006 Special concert by Sejong Soloists in Zankel Hall with Paula Zahn.

2007 Vancouver Cellofest organized in his honor.
