Studies were conducted to determine the usefulness of HOE-39866 (HOE-00661) in chemical fallow systems on the Canadian prairies. HOE-39866 at 0.5 to 1.0 kg ai/ha controlled Russian thistle, kochia, green foxtail, wild oats, and wheat comparable to paraquat, glyphosate, and glyphosate plus the isopropylamine salt of 2,4-D. However, control of barley with HOE-39866 was unacceptable. HOE-39866 was compatible in tank mixtures with ammonium sulfate, paraquat, chlorsulfuron, and metsulfuron. Ammonium sulfate improved weed control when HOE-39866 was applied at 0.25 kg/ha but not at 0.75 kg/ha. Adding paraquat at 0.07 to 0.21 kg ai/ha to HOE-39866 improved control of grass species over HOE-39866 alone. Adding chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron to HOE-39866 provided greater initial control of certain species as well as residual control of many weeds. HOE-39866 alone or in conjunction with other herbicides is an alternative to the herbicides used in chemical fallow systems.

New or recently introduced weeds are biological pollutants in our natural and agricultural ecosystems. Unlike chemical pollutants, new weeds left unchecked often proliferate and pose problems that may not become apparent until eradication is too expensive or impractical. Management strategies for weeds should include: 1. prevention (from entering foreign commerce); 2. exclusion (detection of weed contaminants in imported products at ports of entry); 3. detection, containment, and eradication of incipient infestations; and 4. perpetual control (of widespread species that cannot otherwise be addressed). Appropriate legislative authority, modern weed technology, funding, and a renewed commitment to the concept of prevention are needed to prevent the introduction of new weeds. A national initiative to prevent the establishment of new weeds would be beneficial by saving on future losses and perpetual control costs. Actions taken now will prevent the continued introduction and spread of new weeds in the United States.

Clomazone is used in the Central Great Plains for weed control during fallow in a winter wheat-fallow rotation. Improved precipitation storage during non-crop periods has stimulated new crop rotations such as winter wheat-corn or proso millet-fallow. The objective of this study was to determine if clomazone applied in the fall after winter wheat harvest would injure succeeding spring-planted crops. Greenhouse studies indicated crop tolerance to clomazone was in the order of safflower > corn > proso millet > barley > winter wheat. Clomazone did not affect grain yields of safflower, corn, or proso millet grown at two field sites with different soil textures (silt loam and sandy loam), nor germination of seed from treated plants of these crops. A no-till production system with clomazone increased grain yields for all crops compared to the conventional system where tillage replaced clomazone for fallow weed control.

Ten herbicide treatments were evaluated for early season control of three broadleaf weeds and effects on marketable potato yields in low-organic, coarse-textured soil. All treatments controlled prostrate pigweed 100%. Trifluralin with metolachlor or with EPTC did not control kochia well. Pendimethalin alone or with EPTC controlled Russian thistle poorly, and produced the lowest marketable tuber yields. Fluorochloridone at 0.6 kg ai/ha caused chlorosis and reduced potato yield 11%. Treatments with metribuzin tended to have high potato yields.

The first significant cases of herbicide-resistant weed populations were to the triazines in the 1970s. In the last 10 years there has been an increase in the number of weed populations that have become resistant to an array of herbicides. In some of these cases, like rigid ryegrass in Australia, a multitude of resistant biotypes has evolved with different mechanisms of resistance. If the present trend continues, the number of herbicides effective on certain weed species may diminish rapidly. To counteract this trend, industry has organized a number of intercompany working groups to specifically address the development of resistance and to implement plans to manage resistance. University and extension along with industry personnel across the world have begun educating growers on resistance management. However, this effort needs to be intensified to find new solutions for controlling weeds through the use of integrated weed management practices that incorporate new and established herbicides with cultural, mechanical, and biological control methods. The challenge is to develop cost effective, environmentally sustainable programs for weed control while maintaining the present efficiency in food and fiber production so that needs of an ever expanding human population can be met.

2,4-D diethanolamine control of kochia was influenced by the source of water used as the spray carrier. Sodium bicarbonate in one water source related to the reduced kochia control. Sodium bicarbonate in a water spray carrier antagonized 2,4-D control of all plant species evaluated. Antagonism increased with the tolerance of a species to 2,4-D, concentration of sodium bicarbonate, and spray volume. Sodium bicarbonate antagonism of 2,4-D phytotoxicity was greatest with low temperature and relative humidity.
